626 LX idle problems

OK, so I just bought a 1998 Mazda 626 a month ago. I did not take the car to a mechanic because:

1- The car drove perfectly when I bought it, and 2- I didn't feel like spending money to take the car to a mechanic to have the car checked out. The car was driven by an old man and only has 52,000 miles on it.

I just installed a new head unit in the car to replace the stock radio. Right after installing and testing out the new radio, I started the car and the RPM's went up to around 700 (normal), then sloooooowly started to drop all the way down to 200 RPM's which made the whole car shake and shudder. I had to give it a little gas to raise the RPM's back up, and even then the idle RPM's were below normal (about 500 RPM).

My question is this: would the new radio be causing this? It's only a 50x4 watt unit. Could it be drawing too much power from the alternator? If it was, would that make the RPM's drop like that?

Any help would be appreciated, Thank you for reading.

Stupid me...

I actually think I solved the problem a little bit. When I hooked the negative terminal on the battery back up, I didn't tighten it enough. I tightened it and RPM's don't drop as low now (they drop to 450 then up to 700). I think I need a new battery...

Anyone care to add something else that might contribute to the problem? Perhaps a tune up?

OK. Tightening the battery terminal worked for a day, but now every time I start the car up the RPMs drop and shake the whole car. I'm getting worried. Anyone care to help? Please? (sad1)
