Mazda6 bright red V6 hatch
6 speed V6 Auto tranny production starting in August

I probably would have waited to buy my hatch if I knew about this earlier. I wonder how much this will improve engine performance (if at all).

Here is a link that shows the proposed changes to the ATX and other minor changes starting this August. As far as I know this is happening for sure.

Basically it will look the same as the hatch you get now except certain features that were options are now standard such as 17" alloys and side curtains/air bags. In canada these are already standard features with the V6 but I guess they cost extra in the US according to the link I have posted below.

hatch also gets the slight tinted headlight housings....

Be happy you got a 04...look at the bloated weight gain the 05's get! Mazda must think the car is too fast and is trying to slow it down.

Yes I agree the added weight is unusual, but usually the direction is to cheapen and lighten them up through MCR (material cost reduction) after the first year of production to maintain profits and strict fuel economy standards. Mazda has taken a pleasingly surprize approach and added a great 6 speed ATX. Is this the source of the weight gain? Anyone know where the added weight is coming from? I think we may find because of the closer 6 speed trans. ratios the vehicle probably won't be any slower (04 ATX vs 05 ATX), now maybe the manuals are a different story. In any case I'll be getting one.

If you compare weights, the 6s ATX gains only 10 lbs between 2004 and 2005. Its the MTX's that get slaughtered...especially the 6i's, where weight is extremely important.

Someone mentioned it could be...

1) The inclusion of more base packages.
2) Much added sound insulation to counter "road noise" complaints from people who drive with their windows up and music off.

I noticed that the V6 6-speed ATX gets slightly better fuel economy than the 5 speed MTX. I think they are going to sell alot more ATX's in 2005.

As for the weight difference on the MTX, nothing suggested this by anyone yet would explain any sort of substantial weight increase. What is the weight difference anyways? I found the curb weight in the specs but I don't know what it was in 2004.

The weight increase is from sound deadening material. The later production 04's have it too. Take one for a drive they are WAY quieter than before. The 6-speed auto weighs less than the current 5-speed thats why the weight increase is less with the 6-speed auto. There will be a performance increase with the new tranny as well, I expect it to be almost as fast as the 5-speed.
