$5/gallon in California

Although AAA of California is reporting some drivers are now paying $4 a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, local Cali station KSBW found gas stations in Gorda, south of Big Sur, currently charging $5 per gallon for gas. While that's obviously an isolated occurrence, the average price is getting pretty high up the cost meter.

For instance in Salinas, AAA recorded an average of $3.39 per gallon. Santa Cruz is at an average of $3.37 per gallon. Yes, the gas prices in California are always higher than elsewhere in the country, but this is getting ridiculous. Something must be done! Oh, Toyota -- please come and save us. If they only could get every individual in the United States to drive a Prius -- then all we'd have to worry about is cows farting. Also, we'd be living in a fantasy.

God I haven't filled up in a month (at college car just sits except for the once/twice a week outing) but last time I saw prices were close to $3 here, and thats really high here...I am scared to look now.

Start a petition to Nuke China.

Should solve the problem REALLY fast :)

$4 a gallon up in Canada :)

It was over $5 recently, so anyone paying under $3.50 is getting a good deal imo.

$3.59 For (91)Premium here. Gas is getting to expensive and it is totally ridiculous!!

I remember filling up my 94 Protege LX 13.2gallon tank with about $18bucks. And it took about $20-24 to fill up my MP3 back in 00-01.

Back in 1999 it used to be:
$.99(87)octane..........unleaded fuel
$1.09(89)octane........Power Plus fuel
$1.19(91)octane........premium fuel

Why can't gas go back down to 1.99gallon!! heck i'll even be happy if it goes to 2.09gallon!! And i used to complain back then when it jumped up to 1.69-1.89gallon!!

don't know why people are always surprised and horrified of gas price increases..

if anyone took a look at gas price histories they'd know it always increases in price during the winter since the refineries always increase the amount of heating oil production vs gasoline production which jacks prices up. Which return to normal in the warmer months because heating oil production saps less of the avaliable refinery's resources.

bloomberg index is really the answer, and it dosen't help that the federal tax on gas is something like .50 cents per gallon. However, back on the main reason, whenever there's a natural disaster, war or any other event that might slow down or limit the amount of crude oil shipments into the USA the bloomberg index adjusts the price per barrel of oil in anticipation of the decreased amount of supply, so prices go up when there's a hurricane or any other event like that. However, if there's acutaly no shortage...like there isn't now, that dosen't necessarly mean prices go down, because it's always about guessing that there might be a shortage.

that, and the fact that the entire world is becomming more industrilized is a factor as well, india and china's population are increasingly using cars as a means of transportation which means the USA has more competition in pruchasing crude oil.

the batteries those things use are far more destructive to the enviroment than a new focus is, if people want good gas mileage, they should buy a diesel.

just filled up on the way to work today for 3.35. this is getting crazy..something needs to be done. the prices just keep going up and the dollar value keeps going down.

i remember when i was in high school i worked at a local gas station that was pretty old...had new pumps but the actual station was many years old. the sign in front of the store had medal numbers that you had to change when the price changed. When it went over $1 we didn't know if it even had a 1 or the $1 indicator. So i got up on the latter checked it out and barely separated the 1 that was nearly rusted to the 0. After discovering the 1 i remember it only went to 2... Since then i think that they eliminated the 0 and painted a 3 on it. don't know what they would do with that old sign once 4 comes around...remove the 1?

that's true, however, I'd say it's safe to assume that europeans and the japanese drive signifcantly less than americans do. The average lifespan of an american car these days is 150,000miles+. Most euro/japanese cars hardly see 80k+ within 10years before they're trashed. They more than likely still end up paying more than we do however, since a gallon in most of those countries is twice what it is here.

Dang, we are now #102 on the list. BTW, Europeans pay some real tax on it...

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/ene_gas_pri-energy-gasoline-prices

Look at some of those low numbers...

Canada is 0.05% off of the worldwide average, so lets assume that it's prices are equal to the average.

Price for 1 litre of gas here is about $1.
Canadian dollar is about equal to $1.

1 US gallon = 3.7854118 liters

Therefore, Canada spends ~$3.78 per gallon.
Also, as mentioned, let's regard this as the global average.

Global average gas price ~$3.78/G

So, if:
#138 Venezuela: 0.2%

Then that's 3.78 x .002 (.2%) = $0.00756 US per Gallon (shocked)

SO 15 gallon tank: 15 x $0.00756 = $0.1134! Yikes, just over a dime to fill the Pro :)

And just for fun, last on the list is:
#141 Turkmenistan: 0.03% (not a typo) = $0.001134/G
To bad that in a place called 'Turkmenistan', that 1 US dollar could most likely buy a car :D
