I had a great experience last night washing my P5 at a DIY bay near 38th/42nd and Hiawatha.
This was my first time ever at a DIY bay. I decided to try it out because I'm tired of paying $8 for a crappy automatic carwash that doesn't even come close to cleaning your car (particuarly the hatch area on the P5).
I pulled up to the bay with my pocket stuffed with quarters. The best part was, the bay was totally enclosed! A door opens, you enter and the door closes behind. Inside it was warm and humid. This had an added benefit of not letting the soap dry off the car before I could wash the entire thing.
I took my regular wash mit, water blade and towel with me. Each cycle was $2.50. I used the wash cycle to dispense light soap with high-pressure water. I then used my wash mit to hand wash the car. I fired up the clean-water rinse cycle and blasted the soap off and also sprayed the underbody of the car. A quick water blade and towel to the doorsills and I was done!
For $5 and 30 minutes of my time, this is an awesome deal for a heated workspace and a clean car! I would have preferred more suds, so next time, I will bring my own pre-filled soapy water bucket.
I've finally found my winter carwash solution!! (first)
