400 WHP yet?

well im hoping to put around 250 WHP at somewhat low boost and be able to drive it VERY hard on race days (auto x..not drag).. so 3rd gear thing really isnt that crutial to me... it would just set me at ease to know the tranny isnt going to grenade. so far all ive heard is bad things but not many real cases of ppl destroying their trannies. who knows maybe ill be fine

Igdrasil gave me some great info on this one.... he said thatr there are some guys swapping the gears out of the transmission from the early Mazda 323 GT-X/R BPT equipped cars onto our spline shafts and they work great and the gears are VERY strong... I'm trying to see if I can find one of these trannies as if I can I will happily undertake and document this process for any interested.

say what??? Igdrasil care to elaborate... and how much stronger we talking? Say for a trackwhore P5 minimal street time mainly for track what kinda HP can we expect it to handle? Can i get a part number or years on which cars have these trannies?

Based on what he was saying sounds like they handle over 400 horse drag racign without issue basically...

Do a search for "Mazda BPT" and you'll come across the years... as best as I can tell it is roughly 1989-1993, but I can't find any in the States is the problem.

Well, as far as I know they are holding 400+whp, it will depend on how you switch gears. Also, gear ratio will change, 4th gear will be like the stock 5th gear.

The 323 video I have around the forums has that combination, that car with the stock transmission was finishing the 1/4 mile in 5th gear, the P5 w/ 48Xwhp was also finishing in 5th gear, and both breaking transmissions a lot, now if you hear it in the video, 4th gear is very long and strong. In his case, he just changed 3rd gear and 4th gear.

Well I just found 4 transmissions... ranging from 400 to 1300 for this car....

They were still breaking transmissions after putting in these new gears??? were they breaking gears or other parts?

sorry but clairify... you mean length? or speed wise? How did he change them.?

I will have to ask in details, remember he decided to keep 1st, 2nd and 5th gear. All I heard hes breaking axles...

Kikito told me he was still breaking gears because of missshifts and power shifting because the P5 was pushing 38psi, and in order to keep that much boost up he would have to power shift and eventually breaking axles or gears. Once he was using a small shot of nitrous (35hp) he didnt needed to power shift becase the nitrous would bring the boost up very fast. Since then, no problems with transmissions.

ahh yea the nitrous makes sense... what axels is he using? stock? So if i understand you right he using 1st, 2nd, and 5th from the BPT and then has custom forged gears for 3rd and 4th? How does the motor like that long 4th gear?

No, hes using 1st and 2nd STOCK. 3rd and 4th is BPT.
Let me see if I can find the video.

Ah... 626 axles.

These axels http://www.driveshaftshop.com/item436249.ctlg are already in use but i have heard they are just mildly upgraded 626 axels which worries me if hes breaking them.

I am not the familar with our trannies would you think the BPT 1 st gear is slightly longer at all? I think it that would be a problem at the track esp at 25+ psi...

Yeah... no kidding... getting rid of our short first would be great! Maybe the BPT 2nd would work there if not the 1st.. will all depend on ratios... our 2nd is almost useable as first gear with a powerful enough car.

well we are talking about mid 400hp car. I wonder if that would work... where are you find these trannies?

Igdrasil do you know any place in PR? I know PR is like protege heaven... numbers or links would be great.

I found one in Wisconsin... and one in california... but that's about it... the others I'm not sure on... I will buy one and do it in a month or so when I have the money if it looks like it will pan out. I promise to document and publish how-to's on it... and if it comes down to it I'd be happy to use NSN to import trannies from overseas if necessary. Australia has a LOT of these.

Sure...but! this guy Imports transmissions from the US mostly. Sometimes from Republica Dominicana.

Hey Turf, how much the internals of the P5 tranny weight?

I will try to have pics ASAP, but the job on my friend's trans hasnt started yet.

the entire tranny with belhousing weighs 90 lbs... just the two gear spindles weighs about 15-30 lbs I'd estimate... if your buddy can get me those internals without the casings and the like for a reasonable price (300-400) I'd be all over that in the next months. I'm also going to try to see if the mazda dealer can get me just the gears themselves.

Later!

Steve

If you can get me a part number i can prolly get you a good deal for it. No promises though.

Ha...Jonathan (the spicy MSP that was in modified mag) said he will be at 500 hp...well see. Article said he had a GT28RS but at HIN he had a T3/T4....
