400 WHP yet?

yep it is great to hear. And CP and Beau were both great about it too as we tried to work out what was the problem and who's fault it was :). But in the end it is just fine, so that's great!

I'm beginning to think I'm cursed... one of my cams from the block and head combo that I'm using for this build had a hairline crack in it and it sheared in half on the head during tolerancing... so we are switching to one of my backup cams and are going to magnaflux it and the other cams to verify they are in good shape and then get moving along... but crazy luck as of late I must say!

Later.

major suckage... truely.... but atleast you had abackup handy... otherwise you'd be out even more time.

good luck

I think just a couple days.. I should have the motor Friday unless there is a valve train issue going on right now.. I'm somewhat worried that one of the valves in binding or a tappet is binding for some reason... or even worse that the cam bearings aren't in alignment for some stupid reason... but I'll just hope the cam was bad and that was it which is all my machinist thinks it is... but yeah... it is teh suck... the only thing that will push me back otherwise is if Microtech doesn't cough up my ECU shortly.

I got the exhaust side cam spec'd in last night so that the clearances are close. We had to stem two valves because even with all the shims I bought they weren't quite enough to get small enough. The intake side cam needs to be done and then the head is completed and the motor is done. The block is all assembled. The crank and all bearings and rods and squirters are all in. I should be picking the motor up tomorrow or Friday, and then Friday night I'll dress it completely, and then Saturday morning I'll drop it into the car. Should be tuning it by Saturday night, and then breaking it in through the week... Then a full fluid flush on coolant and oil and she'll be all set to go to race on Sunday the 10th... then assuming that goes reasonably smooth, I'll fine tune it out and get some dynos run the last week of April hopefully. I'll also be investigating the VICS for you guys as I have full control over it with the Microtech :).

turf, now im too lazy to even TRY to search on your name for this, but what have you done about tranny- do you have an LSD? Axles? what? please enlighten me. thanks.

I have a welded MSP LSD, I run RedLine shockproof... and I have a trick up my sleeve that I should have done in about 4 weeks as further tranny improvement. I have not done axles yet as there isn't really a need for them... people break axles from dumping the clutch and using sticky tires... it isn't really a matter of them being weak or too much power... the traction is still the limiting factor. It isn't until you go to drag radials and do launches that axles actually matter. I will eventually upgrade them just as an improvement to the car... and I'll likely have them custom made as I'm hoping to push the corners of the car out a bit... but I might try to swap to AWD next year for fun... so that may wait anyway ;) LOL... but for now I'm just trying to finish this project. I'm also going to flare my fenders and see if I can fit bigger rubber up front. But overall no real modifications to the tranny are necessary. We'll see what does or doesn't break, but I'm pretty confident it will all be fine under the way I have it made.

Otherwise I have a modified ACT pressure plate with an ST3+ ceramic friction disc from SPEC. I don't even have upgraded forks or sycnhros as I don't think they are really necessary (it's been a while since we've had any new "broken tranny" threads).

Well words have been trickling through the grapevine here and there that a few more 3rd gears have been sheared... sounds like the magic number is in the 325 range when it starts happening... now the question is my info and hunch going to be right on why it happens or are we indeed pooched to needing custom cut gears to stay safe!

My budget has been completely tapped out for the car, so I'm going to be stagnant for a little while as I try to finish the car... take a few months to put the last pieces in place (ignition and my "trick" for the tranny)... so my dyno of high power will be out a bit later... but I'll try to do a 15 psi dyno in the near future just to show off the Microtech and the motor for that boost level... but that's about it for a little while until I can recover on the budget (motor went over by about 2K... eek)!

later all.

i have heard of a certain msp that has gone 410 whp with stock tranny but quaife lsd. no sheared gears yet. haltech and thumper.

aww damn. Guess I'll have to keep it at around 300whp then becaus I sure as HELL don't want to fork over the money and time to get some billet gears put in!

I guess it really depends on how much you baby the tranny. I wonder if theres a large difference between the different year trannies (IE- 02.5 and older?)

yeah they run fine for a time... and then out of the blue the gear will shear... Focus had it occur... and I believe one of Beau's guys who is a Marine lost his 3rd gear not that long after his 400 whp dyno...

I'm with you patrick... I don't want to have to fork that money over just yet... I'm working on 3 different tranny solutions right now... but none of them cheap... the cheapest one is about 350 bucks... and the most expensive is in excess of 5 grand... so I'm trying to develop avenues for all of us to survive in the future here! :)

I wonder as well... but I think Focus' car is newer... and in both cases that I know directly of (and there are supposedly 2 more cases that I've picked up heresay on ) were fully engaged in the gear on the highway when they gave it gas and sheared it off... so dunno...

apparently giving it gas to accelerate on the highway or something... but in all cases there were a couple of constants that lead me to believe my theory may hold true.. in which case the 350 dollar solution will give you the margin of protection you need to be safe... I just have to come up with some more money to finish that project on my car and then save money for a new tranny as backup in case my theory doesn't work!

What ever happened to the "i'll shift carefully"

Is the problem more with people not shifting perfectly or has most it been that the part just isn't strong enough for HIGH hp?
