4.388 Ring and Pinion

We have the 4.388 ring and pinion in stock for the Mazda 2 if anyone it looking for one. $573 is the price and the ring gear includes the diff.

How much of a difference are we talking about with this? I might be interested in one down the line but I'm wondering how much of an economy hit the car will take. What RPM would the car be at @70MPH, for example?

The stock final drive is a 3.85 in the Mazda 2. I haven't driven one with the different gear ratio yet. I believe VDSracing is running the 4.388 gear set in his 2. We just need him to chime in on RPM at freeway speeds.

As in the speeds? As in the shifter feel? If you're thinking that a differential ring and pinion swap is going to change shifter feel, you are pants on head retarded.

Corksport: do you have a list of the gear ratios for the 2? It'd be pretty easy to calculate out the gearing of the 4.388.

Found the gear ratios. Using stock wheels + tire height:

Redline Stock (6200 RPM) in mph:
1st - 32
2nd - 60
3rd - 85
4th - 113
5th - 140

Redline with 4.388 (6200rpm) in mph:
1st - 28
2nd - 52
3rd - 75
4th - 99
5th - 125


5th gear
3.85 @ 3000: 69mph
4.388 @ 3000: 60mph

3.85 @ 3500: 80mph
4.388 @ 3500: 70mph

Just kidding (as I was about the 140 MPH top end. LOL)

If somebody wanted to see the effect of the different final ratio, try slapping on a set of smaller diameter 14" wheels and tires (Honda Civic). A friend of mine used to drag race his Integra and had a set of smaller wheels and tires just for those occasional trips to the strip.

Not what I meant at all, I wish first and second ratios were closer together. The 1-2 shift if you're going for fuel mileage is fine. When you wring the car out the first to second shift is horribly mis-matched. As I'm sure we all know. I noticed it the first day I had the car, but what can ya do... I was hoping somewhere in another market somewhere they had different ratios.

It's about the same in a Miata... It drops you to where the peak torque is at.
