3M emblem adhesive...anyone know how to get it off?

When I painted my emblems, thought I would be smart and use the 3M emblem adhesive to glue the emblems back on with. Well, I am known to be a little sloppy at times, and the adhesive came out sort of like model glue, always leaving a string of glue between the part and dispenser. Well this got on the paint of my car, and on top of the emblem. I tried to use 3M adhesive remover(unfortunately a couple of days later) though it got most of the ahesive off the car paint with a lot of rubbing. Actually too much rubbing as I have some nasty rub marks left which I hope I can polish out. But the rear emblem needs to come off and be redone and I am a little afraid of attempting this. The glue seems so hard, not sure what to get it and the emblem off with.

Anyone else ever use this stuff, and did you have sucess if you remove the emblem later?

thanks for any help
Fred

Never used the stuff before, but my suggestion would be to heat it up with a hair drier to see if you can soften it.

And when you go to reattach your emblems, use 3M heavy duty mounting tape; the grey stuff. It will hold like crazy, but you can still peel it off pretty cleanly if you need to.

+1 Use a hair drier or a heat gun and not too close to the emblem or it will start wrinkling. And the adhesiveness should be softened and just use like a card or fishing wire to get it off.

I always used GooGone to get off any kind of adhesive residue. Works perfectly.

+1. Goo Gone is a staple in my chemical cabinet.

Next time use emblem glue. Safe on paint, comes off with Goo Gone.

Thanks. But I sort of thought the emblem adhesive I was using would be easier to use and remove. Especially since they make an adhesive remover. :)

I used that 3M crap too. Not only does it dry yellow, but as you stated it is a royal pain in the ass to work with.

Are you guys talking about the 3M emblem adhesive that comes in a rubber cement like container with the brush?

unfortunately no. mine came in a tube. Looks and feels a lot like model glue, dries very hard. Wish I had seen what you have in that photo, looks like it would be better.

Well, that's good to hear, I bought some of the stuff I posted the image of not too long ago to use on my badges. The stuff has a consistency almost exactly like rubber cement, so I've been kind of nervous about using it. The good thing is though, that 3M states that it's safe for the paint.

if it keeps that consistency, I think that would be ideal. Easy clean up, and easy removal down the line if you need to.

it sounds cray i know but have you tried dryer sheets?
i swear these things will take off ANY thing unwanted from your paint. get them wet and rub them together to get them to foam. then rub them on the stuff you want removed. i always wet the area and then rub the dryer sheet over it.
i have removed tree sap, bugs, road tar, and gum using this method.
i always make sure to re wax that area afterwords.

interesting...never heard of that method, but right now will try anything. :)

We always used a heat gun in the shop. Don't use a hair dryer unless you want to look like your givin ur car a BJ. LOL. Googone works good, so does precleaner, or if the emblem is removed and the surrounding are is flat try an eraser wheel after using the preclean spray or googone.
