3k oil changes HURT engines not HELP!

20k huh? yeah you can do that if you get that crazy expensive oil that trucks use that last 100k miles. Even the Amsoil should be changed at max 15-17k, I'd change it every 10k with amsoil.
I change my oil and filter every 6k miles and I use castrol syntec
If they are going 100k miles, they are probably using a bypass filter. With good enough filtration and decent additives(there are additives built into some bypass filters) you can run forever without a full oil change. There are a few documented occurances of trucks going over 1million miles without an oil change(although oil does have to be topped off periodically). I personally wouldn't take mine past 3k miles though with just a regular filter on.

I haven't read the whole page yet, will do sometime tomorrow.

The semi trucks do not use regular oil. I also forget which kind but it is formulated to go longer and yes the fact that they have so oil is also another factor in how far they can go. But like cars it depends on how you drive the truck. I hauled rock and heavey equipment and we changed about every 50k. We averaged 200k per yr on the trucks.

If you only drive 5-10k per yr you should still change your oil ever 3 mo. The main reason is the engine can have rust build up on the inside an while it wont be much, over a years time it will mess up the oil and the filter. Do this, go get you a SS bolt and put it in oil, let it sit for 3-4 mos. You'll see why you need to change the oil.

Oil change and neglect are my 2 least favorite words right now, considering I blew my engine on my msp and mazda won't cover it under warranty, claiming it's neglect on my behalf for not changing the oil frequently enough. They want $10,000 for new engine+turbo+labor. That will bring me back to stock again. Anyone care to laugh psychotically with me?

I was 1.5k into an oil change when my engine popped. The dealer, at my request, tested the oil and found that the viscosity was severly deteriorated due to gas in it. (Richness of the MSP fuel maps) this was at 17k miles with 3-4k intervals. No Fuel mods at all, and no other mods that would cause the PCM to utilize adaptive stratagies to increas fuel.

I now change my oil ever 2k miles, and my new engine and I are happy for about 13k miles now :D

See the dealer won't even look at my s***. They popped up the hood, they're like yeah, your oil is dark. I'm like uh, you're judging this based on the oil that's still left in the engine? What about the oil that spilled all over the highway? I sort of gave up and want to rebuild a new engine anyways with pistons and rods etc, but my dad is gonna give it another shot with mazda today, he's a very persuasive person.

In my case, I have an oil cooled turbo. It's not liquid cooled at all. The temps that my oil sees are MUCH higher through the turbo than most cars on here. If I didn't change my oil frequently, the turbo bearings would coke up in short order.

If you look at the temp that my turbo bearing gets to and compare it to the breakdown temperature of Mobil 1, you'll see why I don't want to wait 20K to change my oil.

Okay, don't mean to thread jack, but mazda's official word is my CAI made my engine blow thus they won't cover it under warranty.

I change mine every 5-7k. It's time to change it now, actually, but I'm waiting until I get my new baffled oil pan so I dont waste $20.

im going though kinda the same thing, today they will tell me if its covered under warranty, i do have all my oil reciepts though.. so we will see how it goes... hopefully they will let me know today!.

UPDATE: My mom and i talked with the dealer, dealer wants to replace engine but mazda has given no response yet.. will update again! wish me luck ladies!

I change my oil 2-3k but I'm constantly adding more oil cuz the car burns it up. Like 2 trips not even far trips and i've lost a noticeable amount of oil. NOt that i'd have low oil or even half but i would say a quarter of oil would be gone or a little less than a quarter.

Now I'm calling BS on that too. Or else that dealer's a complete idiot. (hah) I'm guessing just a liar.
are you calling me a liar, or him ? judging by the ammount of property he owns all over the world I dont think he's an idiot... I'll take his word for it when he says he bought it back for a total of 16k... it was the car of a friend of his daughter, and the kid traded it in for a ms6 (with navigation & tax & liscense was over $37k) and he gave the kid $16k in trade for the MSP. ..he gave him that much because as he put it "he changed the oil every 2k miles, had all service work done here and I know how he drove the car"

e-jealous ? (hah)

Get it in writing bro.

Get what in writing, official statement saying that CAI caused my engine to blow? And then what? :(

I mean it be nice if they replace it under warranty, so that I have a working car again and don't have to pay for anything out my pocket right now. However, I'm taking this opportunity to rebuild an engine, which I would've done to this one sometime this year anyways. Now I just gotta get a core, and any other parts that I may have damaged.

did you have no piston rings left? how did the fuel get in your oil ?

The gas cap is the black one at the back of the car, on the drivers side. The oil cap is the black cap under the hood, on top of the shiny metal thingy. Don't get them confused :)

In all seriousness though, it reminds me of when I was a kid earning $3.15/hr working at a gas station. Some girl comes in and asks where the water is - apparently her radiator was low - , so I pointed her in the direction. She was there for a very long time, so I went to check on her. I get there just in time to see her topping off her engine with water! Luckily, I caught her before she tried to start it...

And just so you folks don't think I'm just picking on the ladies... Once, and thnkfully only once, I had this guy fly into the station and skid to a halt next to the pumps. I see smoke curling out from under the hood as he jumps out of the car - he then proceeds to yell "my car is on fire, can you help me!" (it was a sunny, hot day too). Jackass...

I'm not calling you or him a liar, just saying that MIGHT make sense in a private sale (if somone wanted said MSP bad enough) but I don't know why a sane dealer would pay only 4 grand depriciation on a car with 50K miles. That or he took them on the price of Mazdaspeed6, which it looks like he completely did. :D (unless you're talking Canadian dollars or something) Case closed.
