Hi Everyone,

My 30,000 mile service is due.
Why should 2 Mazda dealers charge a different amount?
One gave me a quote for $290, the other $390.
I thought all work performed at the service is the same, regardless of which dealer you use.

Have a good weekend...

Ask both dealers what work is included for the quoted price.

Many dealers will have their own list of what they include in the service.
In addition, every dealer charges different labor rates.
I bet you can change the cabin filter and air filter yourself... save a few hundered

Yes - and ask for the price of each item on the list and see if it doesn't come out to be less as the sum of the individual items vs the "special" package deal. Correct on the DIY filters. If you can't find new current year at the auto parts store, the previous year model filter usually works.

Mazda use long life parts so 30,000 mile maintenance isn't big deal, usually you need oil change + cabin air filter+ engine air filter clean up+ tight all bolts on suspension + tire rotation. I will do oil change and air filter myself, our dealership offer free tire rotation for car that sold from them, so basic I will just ask them to tight bolts. If you feel bad about it just go and get oil change and tire rotation then ask them to tight the bolt.

Ask for a complete break down of services and post them here.

Look in you OWNERS MANUAL to see what the Mazda factory recommends. Circle those items and nothing more is required to save your warranty. Dealers often have their own agenda to beef up the bottom line. Ed

Like others have stated, reference Mazda's maintenance schedule, which can be found at:

Looks like its oil change, rotate tires, lubricate locks and hinges and tighten bolts. I recommend that you tell them what to do rather than specify 30,000 mile service.

Your cabin and engine air filters may have already been changed from around 20,000 miles. If not changed them yourselves. Dealer tried to charge me over $140 to changed both. I declined, bought the parts for about $40 and did it myself. Took a total of five minutes.

When I used to work for a dealer, this was considered "gravy" work. If the cabin filters needed to be changed, they charge 1 hour when it took me maybe about 10 minutes.

The CX5 cabin filter has to be one of the easiest to change of any car made! Drop the glove box and it pulls right out. Excellent design and takes no more that 2 minutes to perform.

What bolts do they tighten? Do suspension bolts come loose?

The cabin filter is definitely DIY level 0 if engine oil change is level 3 and rotating tires is level 1.

I would love to see the list of bolts that they tighten.

Not sure if rotating tires is level 1 though. Taking tires out and replacement is not tough but usually folks have 1 lifter and couple of stands. I wanted to do this myself for a long time but was always afraid to over tilt the car, etc. Any ideas?

I am not sure but AT transmission drain and fill at 30k is NOT a bad idea. Even though Mazda states lifetime but this and many, many forums have stated 30k is recommended.

Its not that hard if you have the right tools. I might even do a DIY just to show the proper lifting points and tools you need.

Please, please .. that would be awesome since I need to rotate at about NOW. Costco charges $25 and many others take at least $20.

My Mazda dealer does it for me on each oil change service.
