I have a Magnaflow system that sound very good. . .nice deep tone, a little gurgle at idle. . .not buzzy. . .no rice sound.
The 3" is tough to get through there, but is is possible.
It is also louder than 2.5" (obviously).

the sound is gonna be decided by the type of muffler you choose. the material of the piping matters as well but i think it's safe to say that most people are gonna go with ss piping. if someone goes titanium, i'd like to hear that 
so choose your favorite muffler and have the piping custom made.

maybe just maybe top secret or jic will make a titanium exhaust for a protege......yeah right. it'd be interesting to hear a titanium muffler even. the metal is supposed to resonate differently from ss and as a result, gives a different sound. not sure if this is true, but it'd be cool to hear
Titanium was used for the Mclaren F1 exhaust. If it sounds anything like the Mclaren F1 race car. It sounds like a ricers dream. Honestly, it sounds like the worlds loudest weed wacker. LOL - In 1997 I went to an FIA GT race. Watched MB CLK GTR, Porsche GT1, Lotus GT1, Renault GT1, Morgan, Marcos Manta's , Etc... Out of all of them the Mclaren, with its titanium exhaust, was the only one that sounded like total s*** (weed wacker) down the front straight. Of course, this is not a very fair comparison, but it i the only car with a titanium exhaust that I have heard....

kenetix, judging from your sig, you're running a tsudo muffler right? from what i understand, they only make their ti-muffler with a 2.5" inlet. did you just use that on your 2.75" piping?
Yup, its a 2.5. Just put it on the pipe bender and you can expand it, thats all I've done. It's a little bit louder than stock but not much at all. Its also has a really deep tone to it. The car sounds like a v6 or v8 but its not loud and obnoxious. Of course, depending on what they put inside the tone can change after driving for about 1000 miles or so. It all really depends. The only reason I got the Tsudo was because it ws 180 bucks and it only weighs 8 pounds. Plus it looks cool with the real carbon fiber and the titanium tip.
My friend has the same muffler on his 2003.5 with the stock piping. We just went with 2.5 back from where the stock racing beat muffler was and made that whole section from the axle back 2.5 The flange for the exhaust is a real common one and any muffler shop will have it. The only thing is getting the clearance right because the pipe has to go over that section on the frame.

cool. i didn't know you could just expand the inlet like that. do you think there's room to angle the muffler up and slightly to the side (jdm style)? been wondering about that.

Doing the angle up and to the side would look sick on this car, my old car had the slight angle out the side and I loved that. Hey Kenetix, I am wondering, you have pistons in the car now, did you bore it out, get any horsepower gain from it, and what kind of boost are you running right now? I would love to turn up the boost but I kinda want to do the internals before I do.

Yeah, you have plenty of room to angle it up but it will only go to the side slighty because you have to match it up to the u-shaped outlet in the rear bumber. The reason they angle it out is to smooth the exhaust flow, which you're not really going to have much of since the bend you have to put in the pipe to run it over the frame.
I was running with the forged internals for about 3 months. I couldnt get fuel past the fuel and timing problems to get anywhere over 310 hp. I'm in the process of removing everything and starting from scratch.

i'm fine with just slightly out to the side. i don't like the "exhaust is too big for my car" angle. if you go to hks's website and watch the vid of the evo vii hi-power exhaust, that's the angle i'm going for. now if i can only make my car sound like hks's s2000....mmmmmm

Kenetix, your car had to be running strong at that hp. I bet it was quick. I love messing around with internals, seems fun to me. I was going to totally rebuild my old Mazda, forged pistons, forged rods, rebalanced crank and run a 100 shot on there. What are you looking to do when you start from scratch? Or is that top secret info?

really? which model line? i know they make a ss one for the p5 but that's all i know of.
Nope, nothing secret. I just want to see what kinda of boost and horsepower numbers I can run RELIABLY without any major modifications. Alot of people don't have the money to go spending 3 grand for the fun of boosting around town. Realistically 250 hp isnt out of the question if you can get the fuel and timing problems right. I think the engine can handle it and I KNOW the tranny can so I'm gonna see what happens. Its just the whole thing of getting the right set of mods to work together to get the HP I want.
