With more family members, we really need a van. The mazda5 can fulfill all my requirements. I got two deals from autopriceshare program. One is sport $18630, the other is Touring $19968.
Compared with Sport, the only useful option for me in Touring is the rear camera. Since the price difference between sport and touring is not so big, it become a hard choice for me. Sport or Touring? I am appreciated if current mazda5 owners could give me some advice. Thanks

$1330 for:

17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels
Rear backup sensors
Side sill extensions and rear spoiler
Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio capability
Leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob
Trip computer

Sounds a little pricey for the little bit of differences. It says "rear backup sensors", that is not a rear camera is it? I think that is the parking distance sensors they are referring to?

It would cost more than $1330 to add all of those little things. So go Touring, I would've if they offered the touring with a 6MT.

I would go with the Sport for less money. The biggest thing you're getting is the 17 in rims. Why not stick with the 16s on the sport, use them for your snow tires, sell the OEM Toyos, and get a set of 17s with tires that you really want? Side sill extensions reduce ground clearance, which may hurt you in snowier months And the rear spoiler can be had, painted to match, from Rockauto for $200. All those other doo-dads can be added later if you want.

you decide.. diff would be about 25$/month in payments... I like to have all the bells and whistles from the factory..

Go touring. The built in bluetooth, which was only available on the GT when I got my 08, is the one major thing I really wish I had. It was over 3k difference between the Sport and GT at that time, so I went Sport and got a bluetooth at Costco. 145k later I still think I made the right choice, but I would have gone touring if it was only 1300 bucks difference with bluetooth. The touring is really the best value of the three choices now.

touring for sure, the only reason you go for sports is the 6spd manual which is no longer offered. i got touring with sound and sun (moonroof) package for $20K back in 2012. mazda5 is not a volume seller so you can still knock off some $$. have you checked truecar.com?

Long term plans (more than 5 years) to keep the car? If yes, get the GT. If not, get the Sport.

Obviously the better packaged car will cost more. Unless you are shopping for a weekend racer with minimalist content, it is typically better to have more content in a DD’er. The added cost gets amortized over the period of time you own it, the longer the better. Why not pay up not and reap it while you own it? The main draw to the GT is the leather (among other things), which is great unless you absolutely hate leather then hope you never have the need to dive anything other than entry cars b/c all entry lux/lux cars are leather only… Also, while the GT cost ~$3K more than the Sport upfront, it’s not like you’ll lose the $3K come resale. The GT resale will command more than a Sport! So, during the period of ownership, is it really not worth having the best for a little more?? Situation is different if you only plan to keep the car for a short period of time.

You'll feel better knowing the <'10 GT's BT is completely useless... Does not support AD2P or music stream, only phone calls and incidentally it does interrupts the radio for upcoming google maps turn-by-turn directions.

You also get fog lights on the Touring. They are useless but do break up all the black plastic on the front of the car. I have to say I heavily prefer leather or Alcantara for steering wheels. Your hands are (usually) always in contact with this area. The plastic wheel makes the car feel cheap.

What did you decide? My choice would come down to which was available with a manual transmission. All other configuration options are secondary to that requirement. ;)

Congrats and welcome to the family. We are still in love with our 5 even after 8 years of ownership. It is the longest I have ever owned anything mechanical. Usually Cars last 1 to 2 years with me. But the 5 is so good and versatile that its a keeper until it dies.
