2014 Engine Options...Article From Yesterday

Is it worth it though? It looks like the Mazda3 lost 2/4 mpg going from 2.0 to 2.5 liters (old engines), but only gained 19 hp.

The SKYACTIV gains 34 hp, so might lose a little more, so.... maybe loses 3/5, making the CX5-2.5G around 22/26 mpg (AWD auto)?

I dunno. Love to have the power, but... it's not supposed to be a sports car lol. Decisions, decisions...

My cx5 replaced a v8 540i and in the last 2 months I've not once wished I had more hp. Each person will have different needs but I think the importance on increased hp is overstated by some.

Do you think it'll be available with the Touring? With the Mazda3 and Mazda6 it seems the larger engine is only availiable with the Grand Touring...

Good point, maybe will be available only in the top of the line model. In any case, I just noticed that in the article they do not list the 2.5 as skyactive. Wonder how efficient it will really be or if they are just giving the people who what more power what they want at the cost of more fuel. If that is the case the diesel is the way to go so you can have your cake and eat it too with gobbs of torque.

I would have not considered the CX-5 if the only option was an engine that returned 22-26 MPG. That puts it at CRV, RAV4, Rogue numbers.
The fairly high MPG is what caught my eye first.

Now if the 2.5 returns nearly the same MPG.. i'd be a little pissed.

Agreed, I was working out the math and a 2.5 SKYACTIV-G really doesn't make sense when you can get the diesel. The diesel costs more up front, but you eventually recover the cost through fuel savings (versus the current 2.0 engine).

The CX5 is the first car I have ever financed. 5 yr terms. You think they would allow me to trade up without raping my wallet in 2 yrs or so?
Of course, if they don't offer a manual transmission with the 2.5 then I won't be interested...

I just noticed that in the article they do not list the 2.5 as skyactive.

I found the Mazda press release which mentions:

"The SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine offers maximum torque of 210 Nm / 4,000 rpm and maximum output of 110 kW / 6,000 rpm. The SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter engine, deployed for the first time in the new Mazda6, offers a maximum torque of 256 Nm / 3,250 rpm and maximum output of 141 kW / 5,700 rpm. The SKYACTIV-G 2.5 also features a balance shaft that contributes to the mitigation of engine vibration and low noise output."

EDIT: Also of note, http://www.trucktrend.com/features/...828_2014_mazda_cx_5_may_get_diesel/index.html mentions:

"The CUV was introduced with a 2.0-liter version of the company's Skyactiv I-4 which has been well-reviewed though a lack of power has been cited as a glaring shortcoming. To remedy the situation, the company is reportedly preparing a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine to supplement the powertrain lineup to improve performance. The larger gasoline engine is expected to be available in the first quarter of calendar 2013.

2 different articles in 2 days, sounds to me like we are going to see the 2.5 early next year. Little confused..........is the 2.5 going to be Skyactiv or not??

Yes. Or well at least the new Mazda6 is going to have a SKYACTIV 2.5G option, so we're assuming that's the one going into the CX-5 as well.

Still, it's all rumor at this point. We know the diesel is probably coming since the CX-5 diesel actually exists in other countries. But the 2.5G CX-5 doesn't even exist anywhere... yet ;)

This bigger gas option may also mean that the US is not going to get the diesel. 3 engine choices would just be too much and take a lot of the profit out of this "world" car with too many configurations.

The high volume world CUV from Ford (new Escape/Kuga) has 3 engines available just in the US market.

Hold on a second, isn't the whole idea of the CX-5 fuel efficiency from the skyactive?

A 2.5 engine will just make it like any of the current Mazda 3 engines (unless it's different of course).

Also a 22/27 US mpg will make the CX-5 just like any of the other CUV.

That said, can't wait for the turbo diesel model to come to north america!

As for the mileage penalty of the 2.5G, http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/sedans/1208_2014_mazda6_first_look/ says about the Mazda6:

"The 2.0-liter engine produces 148 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque... this engine will return the equivalent of 39 to 40 mpg combined. The larger 2.5-liter engine makes 189 hp and 189 lb-ft... It's claimed to return a combined 37 mpg."

So I'd assume opting for the 2.5G instead of the 2.0G in the CX-5 would lose 2-3 mpgs (combined, real-world mpgs) as well. Not a huge loss. Fuelly.com puts the CX-5 around 29 mpg in real-world use, so would you deal with 26 mpg instead to get 189 hp?

I would absolutely deal with 26mpg average to get 189hp. (yippy)

while this is great news overall, it makes me wish i could have waited. but in my situation i needed a new vehicle asap and waiting was not an option. plus, i've been lurking the rav4 and tiguan forums for two years already, researching and waiting for something like the mpgs in the cx-5 to finally be made available.

Well there you go! You waited until you got the perfect MPG car ;)

For what it's worth, I haven't purchased yet, and I could wait a few years if I had to, and yet I'm still leaning towards the current CX-5. If the 2.0 is *enough*, then I'd rather have the couple extra MPGs. I also don't want to be forced to get the Grand Touring, as I expect the 2.5 will do.

I expect both the 2.2 tt diesel and the 2.5L Skyactiv gasser to be optional (extra cost) engines in CX-5 in 2013.

I also predict the 2.0L Skyactiv gasser will be the volume seller in US market and continue to have the highest gas mileage rating of any CUV running on regular gasoline. It still would be the engine (for the MPG) that I would select (like most CX-5 buyers will select 2.0L for MPG and lower purchase price), being 1 of 3 vehicles at home.

btw-I bet most US CX-5's are in multivehicle households.

Since mpg is not linear, losing 3 mpg for Mazda6 2.5L skyactiv doesn't necessarily translate directly to lose 3 mpg for CX5. In comparison tests the power category is what hurts CX5. I'd rather have the additional power, especially for highway passing.

Of course, it's unlikely that the 6mt will be available for the 2.5L (not sure if that'll be the case with Mazda6).
