Anyone have this happen? When attempting to start my car, I put my foot on the brake and push the starter button and... Nothing. I get out and push the car enough to rock it back and forth a few times and when I get in to start,,, it starts. This has happened the last two mornings- temps at about zero. Any ideas why this is happening??? Thanks!

My question is what prompted you to rock it back and forth in attempting to start it!?

Standard or automatic? It sounds like maybe it is not quite in park for some reason if it is auto.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're the first to have this exact scenario happen. In fact, I'm quite surprised your first instinct was to physically rock your car back and forth when it didn't start. But, I guess it worked. Might be a park switch or something as mentioned.

I guess I rocked it because you have to apply the brake to start it. I thought maybe it wasn't completely in park??? More likely just dumb luck....

1) That's crazy.
2) I'm in Toronto with -30C and have not had a problem starting my CX-5.

Started fine today. Could it be some connection between the brake pedal and the ignition switch? When it wouldn't start, I pressed on the brake pedal but when I would press the ignition it wouldn't light up and it was just dead.

I think it may not have sensed the key. The key is left in the car and maybe the cold (about 0) affected the key???

Read section 3 of your manual. Or, I guess you could just keep rocking it.

Key Suspend Function

If a key is left in the vehicle, the functions
of the key left in the vehicle are
temporarily suspended to prevent theft of
the vehicle.
The following are inoperable:
l Starting the engine using the push
button start.
l (With the advanced keyless function)
Operating the request switches.
To restore these functions, perform any
one of the following:
l Press a button on the key which has
had its functions temporarily
suspended.
l For vehicles with a type A meter,
messages are displayed in the
instrument cluster.
(Manual transaxle)
When carrying another key, depress the
clutch pedal until the KEY indicator
light (green) illuminates.
(Automatic transaxle)
When carrying another key, depress the
brake pedal until the KEY indicator
light (green) illuminates.
Refer to Warning/Indicator Lights on
page 4-15.
Before Driving
Keys

Plus, a lot of these systems use more power from the key fob when it is in constant communication with the car so your fob battery may be low. When the car senses the fob it is constantly sending a signal back and forth as opposed to when the key is away from the car it is likely in a lower power mode.

Thanks, Nobnerd. My back will be happy to know. I feel bad that it's attached to an idiot.

We all do stupid things at times. Usually not THAT stupid, but stupid. ;p j/k
Regardless, welcome to the forums. Eventually we got to the bottom of it.

....or could it be that you push the start button first (even for just a second) before stepping on the brake? That happened to me twice, pushing the start button even a second ahead before the brake pedal wont start the car. It's a safety feature (cool)
