2013 CX-5 P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire issue

Interesting info about Miller Cycle a bit off topic while looking up compression

Hello all,

I have a CX5 sport with about 130,000 miles on it. I have been dealing with a cylinder two misfire for quite some time. I replace the spark plugs twice. I’ve also replaced all the coils. I also cleaned out the intake valves. I took it to a mechanic who was not very helpful. The car would lose power, but improves after replacing spark plugs only to come back a few months later. Has anybody experienced this? Any thoughts or ideas? I have not done a compression test or replace the fuel injector. Thanks.
New to this forum but my 14 cx-5 has had something similar- Very short-lived spark plugs in cylinder 3, I have replaced it twice in the past two years, the coil pack was out for cylinder 3, also replaced it one year ago. I checked the spark plugs in the other three cylinders, they are also pretty bad (although not misfired yet) after about 10k miles. I was thinking of cleaning up the intake as others suggested, but it seems it does not work for your case. I wonder if you have figured out what is going on?

Not yet. I am going to replace the fuel injector and do a compression test. I’m trying Techron as we speak

I'm chasing the exact same problem (PO302) on a 2013 CX5. The compression on cyl 2 is 130 and I can swap injectors and coil packs and the problem just comes back. And yes I'm running the NGK iridium plugs from Oreilly's. What I've found is if I disconnect the negative bat terminal and touch it to the positive for 60 seconds, the problem goes away for a few weeks but it still comes back at random intervals (2 weeks, 12 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 days, 8 weeks, etc.). I also have a generic permanent PO302 that I can't clear.

We took it to a "reputable" shop who tried to convince me cyl 2 had no compression when they just didn't push the connector all the way in to the coil pack.

This is driving me crazy since it's my 67 yo sisters car and neither she nor I have the money to be paying multiple crappy shops until we find one that's capable of actually fixing the problem.

Air, fuel, spark - that's all it takes. You'll have to check them all. I would never use Delphi coils. If you have an advanced scanner all will be revealed and in the long run cheaper than swapping parts. The plugs you used may be of the wrong resistance for the coils and all indications appear ignition related. But you already have a clue - #2. Lift the coil while engine running and listen for the difference in engine sound or do as suggested by another person and swap coils to see if the problem follows to another cylinder.

Following. I am experiencing the same issue with my dad’s 2013 CX5 with 105k miles. The error code is a misfire on cylinder #3. I’ve swapped the coils, changed the plugs, installed remanufactured injectors but the CEL still comes on even though the car runs perfectly fine. Next on my list is to perform a compression test and get a full carbon clean.

Update. I think the problem is solved 🤞. I ended taking the coils and plugs out. Then removed the intake valves and CLEANED. I used the ziptie method. There are some good YouTube tutorials on it. I even used some brake cleaner to really get rid of it. Then put it back together. Then I put in a lot of Techron cleaners with high octane gas. Put on some highway miles. Oil change afterwards and eventually the light went off. No more codes. Its been holding steady for now. Thanks for your help

Thanks for the update! I just started having this issue and have just started changing the coils and spark plugs. I will try cleaning it and following some of the suggestions. Thanks!!

Yeah its been a few months. Nothing popped up on scanner. Just be sure to really clean the valves. Use brake cleaner if you have to. After you put it back together, floor it hard. Loads of white smoke is what you’re looking for. Oil change for safe keeping. I now put in some Techron every few hundred miles.

pull out the plugs again and check their gap using a precise spark plug gap tool. I was dealing with a misfire due to incorrect gap.
