2010 Camaro SS tempting

Why do my eyes keep wandering at the new Camaro SS...I think I have a sweet spot for the V8 torque and rumble

I test drove one, and it drove pretty decently (was a V6 as I recall). The interior is a bit cheap, and the visibility out of the back is horrific. I merged onto the freeway, looked over my left shoulder and literally couldn't see anything...I had to lean way over to feel safe pulling into traffic. It's a lot bigger car than it might seem, especially when you get into it.

My first car was a Camaro, so I checked it out for that reason, but something where I have no visibility in certain situations just isn't the car for me.

Hmmm interesting....anyone test drive an SS? How was the power and handling...ride quality compared to the MS6?

I don't think you can compare the two really. In terms of comfort and daily-drivability, I think the MS6 wins. Especially in overall practicality. Camaro is just a secondary car. Too much concept to waste on daily beating a gigantic and retro car.

I looked at the SS. The jersey-italian sterotype(no, not the MTV kind) in me was drawn to it. However, I found for such a large car, the seats and interior were just too small.

Still...its a nice looking car

I drove an SS a few months ago. It feels like a huge, heavy car. Love the V8 sounds, but it didn't overwhelm me with power. The sheer heft of the car and all the rubber on the road keeps things tame.

It was a beautiful deep wine color (can't recall the actual name of the color) and it was completely loaded. LOVE the remote start. Hate the cheap, flimsy looking door trim. They really needed to spend more time and money on that. Overall, I really like the car - could spend hours just looking at it. If I was in the market for a Camaro at all, it would be the V6 2LT.

agreed. The Camaro is too much of an old style muscle car for it to be practical in today's standards.

^agreed, but still looks like it would be fun to drive*.

*Only in a straight line, and on dry pavement

Typical domestic car, looks good from the outside but is built as cheaply as possible with a plastic interior and archaic engineering. Not to mention it's HUGE and heavy.

Maybe, but considering the target consumer it's not a big deal. Muscle car fans have always prefered bigger engines/ outside apperance over interior luxury. It also means interior panels are cheaper to replace.

You can bring up the SLA vs. IRS, but it's really a moot point now. After driving all three pony cars, the 2010 Mustang was still the most impressive total package, and the new powertrains for 2011 will only step it up one notch higher. The Camaro suffers in a shoddy interior (even in 2SS trim with all the goodies) and poor visibility/ergonomics from inside. The Challenger...well...I'm not even gonna go there.

I'm also considering making the move to a pony car after the MS6. Its a big departure from this platform, and I'd have to make some compromises, but I think it's a logical move for me in the near future.

I never would bring it up because it's an archaic argument that has never gone anywhere. That is only one element of MANY that can make or break a car in terms of handling.

I agree. IMO, they should have went with the Watt's link setup for better performance, but it sounds like the move in 2014 will be to an IRS equipped global chassis.

FWIW, I drove the Challenger at Chrysler's Proving Grounds in MI, across some of the same roads they fine tune their chassis. It's a wallowing pig and its weight is much more evident than the Camaro. The 2SS I drove with 6-speed was decent, but I hate the placement of things inside, the steering wheel seemed awful, and you get a feeling of being cramped in the front seats no matter what position you put them in (I'm 6'4" mind you).

that's no excuse. Americans are taller and larger than most of the rest of the world.

I'll have my hands on a 2011 Mustang here soon, and I'm anxious to see how the new motors feel. I have a feeling the V6 will be the new platform to really throw the power at.

GM needs to make a few changes for 2011 on the Camaro as well. Stop with the silly packages, like the Transformers one, and the green one (forget the name).

Back to the OP, as nice as it looks, you'd be disappointed with the Camaro. Go drive the pony cars and see which one you like best if that's what you're in the market for.

I have a 2010 Mustang GT w/ track pack. The decision was easy when compared to the other cars available in it's class.

The only thing I like about the Camaro is the engine and platform it rides around on. The Mustang is okay but I see way to many of them. I would just go buy a used BMW 335i and mod it.

I've been so out of touch with American muscle I do not even know what the MSRPs are for both the Camaro or Mustang.
