what would be the cost of labor and the time needed to swap pistons and rods?
TX Speed Demon said:Dude, if you only want 200 whp, you don't need a full exhaust. Get an Apex 2.5 incher. I got mine for $125 used about 1.5 years ago and it's still holding strong. You can keep the stock resonator and muffler too, keeps the sound quiet and stealthy. Or just go to a muffler shop and get a straight pipe made. Guys here in Dallas are doing it for $60 and seeing good gains. Just getting rid of the cats is all you need to do to the exhaust on a 200 whp car.
Get a new front motor mount and a rear one if you can afford it. The stock ones will definately rip. Those run about $80 each.
Upgrade your intake with a used injen - $125
Get a manual boost controller at 8-10 psi - $50

That's only about $450 there. Enough left over for an upgraded SMIC or a DSM AFC and you'd be over 200whp for under $1K.

PlatinumMSP said:its been done many times man, i'm just looking for the right route there, i'm considering saving up for a vibrant exaust, i want at least 2.5", the corksport just seems a little too cheap for some reason...

PlatinumMSP said:i'd like to do it without blowing my engine and staying within emissions, yeah i know motor mounts are in my future, i'd like to stay away from the mbc though i think that has led to the death of many engines here on the forum, which apex 2.5 incher are you refering too? the catless dp? i think i can get a catted MAM midpipe for like $200 but from what i hear, i need to free up the whole exhaust to keep my engine alive before i up the boost any
At 10psi you should be very close. With some EMS I'm sure you'd go over that. Time to hit the dyno and find out for sure. (thumb)MyOrangeToy said:wow... seems like i m not far from 200whp!
I have Injen CAI, Apex 2.5 DP(1 cat), custom cat back, FMIC and a HKS EVC
good luck (thumb) sounds goodPlatinumMSP said:So this is my plan to get over 200whp with just two more mods to my current setup....
3" full exaust
Unichip at hi-boost
thats about all i want to do to my car, opinions? i'm an engineering student so i dont have time for a job, but i cant help but want to mod my msp, my funds pretty much come straight out of my student loans, so i want my mods to count and not blow my engine
what do you guys think?
TX Speed Demon said:You don't need to free up the whole exhaust to get 200 whp. A 3" one is severe overkill for that power level. 2.5" will be plenty big enough for 250whp. A 3" exhaust on a 200whp car will just make your slow car sound loud and annoying.
The Apex exhaust I have is the 2.5" catless one. If you just replace the mid pipe then it's only 4 bolts to swap on the stock pipe for emmesions testing, and that's only if you are in a state that makes visual checks. If your state only reads the ODII port, you should pass as long as you don't have a CEL.
MBCs haven't led to the death of any cars, poor driving habits have. Boost smartly and you'll be fine. Stay out of boost in 5th gear (4th gets you over 100mph), Use high octane gas, and roll into the throttle to avoid large boost spikes and you'll be fine. Most blown engines have happened from excessive boost in low rpms due to driver error.

After you give the car a certain amount of throttle you will leave vacuum and enter into boost. Basically when in 5th gear just keep a steady amount of gas while cruising and you easily stay out of boost. To be able to monitor it better you need a boost gauge so you know when you cross that line.CulRidr said:How exactly do you avoid boosting in 5th gear? newbie question but I haven't found the answer after doing a search. what would you need to do to have boost only running through the 1st 4 gears?
