2008 Chevy Malibu (Large Pics)

Ford does it too... the Ford Focus, Mazda6, Mercury Milan, and some Lincoln all used the same platform as well. Same cookie dough, just different cookie cutter lol.

Ford Focus (C1 platform) = Ford Fusion CUV (Euro), Ford C-Max MPV (Euro) Mazda3, Mazda5, and Volvo S40/V50/C70/C30. Future models = Ford Kuga CUV, Volvo XC50, and MKII US Focus.

Fusion (CD3 platform) = Mazda6, Merury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ, Mazda CX-9, Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKX.

Yup it is. And Pontiac G6, Saab 9-3, Cadillac BLS (Euro), Opel Vectra and Signum, and the next gen Saab 9-5.

Atleast its not just different head and tails like GM use to do back in the good old days.

Yeah, I'm not so much referring to platform sharing like you guys are referring to as an entirely identical car mechanically with some styling changes.

Fusion, Milan, and MKZ are like different option packages of the same car.

The Saabs, at least, are heavily modified versions of this chassis.

I don't think a lot of people know this, but IIRC every single car that Honda makes is based on a modified version
of two different chassis.

This is the part I don't get. I really believe the US automakers would sell even more cars (to people like us, for example) if they just made a real effort to
'get it right'.
I think there are a lot of people who'd love to buy an American car again, if they
could be proud of driving one. Especially 'old' guys like me who got their licenses when Japanese imports were a rare sighting.
That said, I love my Mazda and will always have one. Mazda does get it right.
Good looks, good handling (very important to me), nice interior, and reliability.
Geez, GM, is it really that hard????

GM's starting to come around, but it seems like everything they come out with that's any good at the moment is imported from Opel or Holden. The new CTS looks promising as well.

Well, i kinda like it. And i do like the interior. All i have to say is that finally an American car company came out with a steering wheel that doesn't look like it should be on a SUV.

Reviving this thread FWIW...

I finally got a chance to see and seat-on an LT at a mall showroom today (2LT?, leather, nice 17 5-spoke wheels and a decent metallic silver paint). It definitely looks/feels much better than its predecessor and it has some nice touches but, although the front and backs seats are very spacious, the exterior looks humongous (not just long but "bloated", check out 2007-2008 numbers below, they don't look thaaat different in essence, but...). Mid-size sedans are all following the Honda Accord "bigger is better" trend, mmmmh, bah...

And yeah, what is with the taillights? I wanted to see them in-person, but my opinion did not change a bit, they look ugly (pics and in-person) (headshake

still looks boring... the exterior is just uhhh kinda bulkish? cant really find the right word for it, interior looks good though, but dont like the color combo

The interior is amazing Lightyears ahead of what GM is putting together now. I think that cheese slicer front end is nasty s***
