I've been lurking on this list for a few weeks. I'm considering replacing my '93 Camry SE V6 5 Spd MT @ 150,000 miles with a Mazda6 or maybe the MS6. I've noticed that the horsepower ratings are down for all engines. The 2.3L-I4 went from 160hp to 156hp. The 3.0L-V6 went from 220hp to 212hp. The 2.3L-I4 MS6 turbo went from 274hp to 270hp. Is the change 2007 emissions related? Is the change related to the new SAE ratings method?

hmm... interesting... if it is emissions, just rip out the cats wen u get the car! but i wanna know too now...

My guess would be that it's due to the new SAE ratings. I think these numbers are closer to reality.

Its not emissions related... they are just measuring it differently. They used to test it with some kind of belt not hooked up now they test it with it or somethign liek that... so basically if you dynoed a car before and after the change they would be the same on the dyno.

I have read on other forums that this is in fact the case. This allows more accurate and reproducible reporting of HP levels. It is very responsible that Mazda has changed the numbers to reflect the changes in the testing procedures. This avoids claims of Mazda "overstating" the HP production of their vehicles.
