2007-09 Mazda3 and Mazda5s Recalled to Fix Power Steering Issue

If I bought my Mazda used, can I still got to a Mazda dealership to get the powersteering issue fixed? How will mazda know to send me a letter if I didn't buy from a dealership?

V_Tofu,

Two ways: Register your car w/ VIN @ www.mazdausa.com (under "owners">>"MyMazda") or mail in the change of owner/address postcard in the back of the warranty booklet, provided it's still with the car.

As for recall, as long as your VIN has the recall against it, the dealer should fix the issue, regardless of whether you have a postcard.

Also, somehow the DMV in your state is linked to a national database, at least here in the US anyway, and you will get a letter automatically. I got one for a truck I owned for ten years before the recall letter came. Even if you don't get a letter you can still just take it in and it will be replaced. Actually, now that I think about it, my Mazda MX3 seatbelt was recalled and I had it replaced as 16 year old car with 200,000 miles on it. I never got a letter because I bought it after the letters went out. You should always have a dealer check for recalls when you buy a car in case the letters went out to a previous owner.

The recall is for the car, not the owner, so yes it would be covered even if you were not the original owner. This is for the US, I assume Canada is the same way but I'm not sure. You don't need the postcard, just your VIN though wait a few weeks for the information to be entered into their system, then call the dealer with your VIN and ask them.

Pretty amazing that such an obvious issue was "hidden" from official recall for so long with such a documented history. Only ~33 complaints is all it took - it apparently matters to take the time to report legit concerns to get OEMs to take the action they should have done so long before.

Should I be expecting a notice in the mail from Mazda? Or is it my responsibility to be informed and call the dealer and thell them I want my vehicle fixed under the recall?

So I called my dealership today, and they know about it. They said that Mazda should be sending something out in the mail and that we should see it in about a week. I'll wait a week and if I still don't have anything I will call again and see if they can verify and get it in.

I logged into my Mazda account yesterday and even though my car falls within all known ranges of affected cars, the Mazda site clearly stated that there were no recalls. Whatever.

i also logged into mymazda and it said nothing about my vehicle having recalls. i was assured from the dealership that they know and will be sending something out. the dealership also said they have no parts for it at this time. fun.

Thank goodness. I've had my PS cut out on me a couple times now - once when idling for a long time and once when I was screwing around and turned the ignition off while the car was moving - when I turned it back on, no power steering. Luckily it was on the street in front of my house (25MPH) so there was no danger there, but it freaked me out a bit.

My car is just out of warranty, so I was really hoping I could dodge this bullet if it totally failed.

Aside from this, my only complaint with the car is backing up in the morning the rear pads HOWL! Hasn't bothered me enough to fix it, but still...

Apparently this recall for Mazda 3s and 5s WILL include 90,000 vehicles in Canada built from April 2007 to November 2008. Overall, 300,000 vehicles are part of the recall across North America.

Coincidentally my fiancee reported that our PS dash light finally came on yesterday. Thank goodness it's being recalled.

Whaaaat? A recall? :p

History in the making with this saga, now, let's see how fast can dealers get to it :(

Thanks, but does this apply to Canadian owners?

If our P/S goes out, I hope I'm the one driving and not my wife!

I hope the dealer I bought mine from can fix it promptly.

Thanks, Y'all, for the info.

So, was this problem fixed in the 2010 mz3, or is the 2010 model just too new to have been swept up in the recall, and, essentially, a ticking time bomb for us owners?

according to this article

The recall comes about a year after Mazda started fixing vehicles in Japan for the same problem.

So this make me believe that the 2010 models all have the revised power steering system. So... you should be ok.

Wow, helpful article, thanks! Yeah, I agree, it does sound as though they solved it going forward for 2010 model years. I'm glad it's a recall, some of those years were surely out of warranty.

Ok my power steering cut out the other day... well it didn't cut out, I'm embarrassed to say that I had an opportunity on a straight highway with no cars around to try a hypermiling technique of putting the car in neutral, turning off the ignition, and letting the car roll down the highway. When I had to accelerate, I turned the car on and all was normal, except the power steering didn't come back on. I had my first hand experience how even when moving how a failed power steering is worse then a car that doesn't have power steering in the first place, I was nervous to be honest, I went through two long radii curves before stopping at a red light where I turned off the car and restarted it again, power steering came back on. I really want to practice hypermiling but this has got me thinking long and hard about it. My Celica might fare better.

the electric system that the 3's and 5's have might not be as easy to turn as an old hydraulic systems were when they failed.
