No, I mean it seems unclear how much of this money if any will be going towards new hardware, and how much will be used for keeping up with monthly hosting payments.
Contributions solely to help pay the monthly bills are certainly a worthy cause, but new hardware is another incentive that I think would encourage even more people to donate. I remember there were a couple threads from people asking what it would take to get some better servers.
I was thinking it would be cool to maybe have some sort of tiered goals. Like past a certain point, all money goes to new equipment, up to some point where we know what the equipment will cost, if that makes any sense.

We could definitely use an upgrade even now! We've done some research and we found another Host with an attractive offer...but our monthly hosting bill would go from $320 to $400+ a month (Dual 2.8GHz Xeon Processors w/ 4gigs ram)!

1 year at $400+ a month would be nearly $5000 beans! If we found somewhere to place a server we could buy our own for that kind of cash.

At this rate...I wonder if you guys could generate 5 grand by New years day!?!

Ps...It really means a lot to me to see you guys fork over your hard earned cash to help out the site...even those who are new around here are getting involved...with members like you guys...Mazda Forums is going to be around for a long time! (rockon)

Currently we do everything with a colo facility that I guess "rents" us the server. But even on that upgrades are not free. There's hefty setup fees and monthly fees for upgrades. Then there's the rest of the services to support the site (that runs on other servers I manage), like dns, mail, etc.... as well as off-site backups (in case of major problems with the colo facility) etc....

Typically we serve up about 700gigs a month more or less. And the dual xeon with 2 gigs ram is pretty much at load between 2-4 at all times and 2gb memory used. When things get really heavy it starts paging, and that's when you see it slow to a crawl.

We're always working on ways to improve performance of the site, but it's a game of tag. I improve the speed, and soon after usage increases and it's back to square 1.

I'd much prefer for us to own/lease the server ourselves instead of dropping a hefty monthly charge, but, despite the pipe at my work being pretty hefty (i run the network so I could host it there for free), I cannot yet do 700gb month (that is almost 3 mbps sustained), and the cost of increasing my pipe to support the forum is more than we currently pay monthly. So for now we stay with EV1, but even then, every year or two the box needs to be replaced.

Enry: from what you said, it sounds like the processing power is fine, but it could just use some more RAM. But honestly I don't know a whole lot about exactly how server hardware affects performance.

I think everyone would agree that it would be great if you could own your own server and cut down on the monthly fees. With all the members we have here, maybe someone knows how to help get us our own hosting space w/ fat pipes or whatever it is we need exactly.

Sorry if you think I'm going OT, just trying to help. I think this discussion is relevant but maybe it does deserve it's own thread. I just feel that discussing your exact needs with the community can only be beneficial.

Believe me peepsalot, building a server machine is less than fun. It's far easier to just pay some company to do it for you. Plus, if there's a problem with it, they have back-up servers to run while they fix the problems, plus they'll be able to fix the probs way faster. Servers can be a ton of work. It's just too time consuming. If he built one, and it went down, no forums for however long it takes to find and fix the problem. That's probably why they're just paying for the service. How long before the "Donated $xx" shows beneath our avatars? No hurry, just wondering. (thumb)
