2004 Mazda 3 Battery replacement

I replaced the stock battery on my 3 today with the factory rated Duralast Gold from Autozone. After replacement, I immediately took the car out for a drive. The idle was extreemely low after the car warmed up, eventually getting so low the engine stalled whenever I would take my foot off the gas (car has the automatic transmission).

I got home using the 2-foot method (a little scary). When I pulled into my garage, I shifted to neutral and left the car idling. It didnt stall when in neutral. The tachometer hung around 200-300rpm. After about 30 seconds, it seemed to reset itself to ~650rpm, and stayed smooth. I shifted to park, drive, and reverse and the idle held around 650.

Was the ecu relearning some things since the battery was out? Its my wife's car, who is not a great driver to begin with, so I don't want to turn her lose with something that might stall while shes driving.

Any info on this is appreciated.

Sounds to me like the engine was just reprogramming itself. Whenever you disconnect the battery the ECU loses some information. After a few minutes of idling and/or driving it should be back to normal. If you don't have any more trouble with the car I'd say you're in the clear.
