2002 Protege: Clicking/rattling noise when accelerating - I FIXED IT & FEELS SO GOOD!
My 2002 Protege developed a clicking/rattling noise when I step on gas paddle, especially when climbing hills for a while. Searched everywhere and asked friends for a solution and received various suggestions. I have tried adding a bit more engine oil, using premium gas, checking timing chain, spark plugs, etc. They all helped a little, but problem remains. Yesterday, my check engine light was on and engine temp was very high when I stopped at traffic light (but temp went to normal when driving). I used a code reader when I got home and found P0171 code with "system too lean on bank1". Searched it up and checked the intake hose - it was cracked. Bought a new hose for $45 and replaced at the parking lot in 10 minutes. ALL my problem was gone! What a simple fix!
