2002 P5, what are the common problems?

We are looking into getting a 2002 P5 (auto) but we want to know what are some of the common problems with this particular model. So we know what to look for when we go car shopping. :p

So far I've read that:

1. Auto tranny slips and fails (how do we detect this?)
2. AC doesn't work on setting 2 or 3 (so the AC light goes out on 2 or 3 right?)

What else?

the AC thing just started happening to me last night, it's no biggy really you just fool around with it and it works again.

rattles are annoying and you have to hunt them out.

that's the only problem i've had in mine that wasn't my own fault

having same problem with my sport automatic it won't shift up anymore only down I'm so pissed now i got to go to mazda and they'll going to charge me an arm and a leg

my 02 has had minimal issues with 68k on the meter. EGR valve stuck open and was replaced under warranty. other than that, the car has been a pleasure to own.oh, i've had other issues, but theay were all related to my performance mods, not a mazda problem.

I think the slipping tranny is only an issue for those who have abused their engine, or use the sport shift too much, a 2002 (not 2002.5) did not have the sport shift.
I have the 2002 and I haven't had a single problem with the tranny really.

EGR is something to look for, but not a big deal, can be easily removed with a wrench and cleaned at home...

I haven't had the A/C control problem either

you might want to check the TSB listings, I can never remember the page, but do a search and you will find it.

Overall, the only things I have done to mine is tranny flush, regular oil changes, and the mods I slapped on the thing.

Several people have had to replace ABS sensors including myself. My failure happend after about 25K miles.

The A/C problem is minor...it flickers on and off but eventually will stay on. (At least that's what my car does). There is a TSB out and the dealer should fix it. I just haven't had time to go in.

As you mentioned, some people have had problems with the auto tranny. Some people also complained of clutch chatter on cold mornings with the manual tranny but most just wanted a free clutch from the dealer.

I can't think of any other issues that were not caused by modding.

Luckily for me I dont have ABS.....(sad) I have a 2002 with only the floor mat factory option. Just hit 60k miles with no trouble to speak of. I have a regular auto, not a sport.

I have a 2002 with the basic automatic (an actual '02, not an '02.5), and so far the only problem I've had is a leaky driver's side rear strut.
I'm replacing all of those anyway, when I upgrade to the Eibach pro-kit springs.

who needs ABS????? j/k

well, the only trouble i have had was the EGR valve at 38K.....

at 50K now and hope for many more trouble free miles...........

Lets see...common issues with my 02 P5

rusting brake rotors.
Wheels stuck on car due to hub rusting
Leaky side markers.
The *)& *)mn spoiler!!
Ignition coils (mounting and failure)
Security System issues (sensitivity)
Parts

Thats about all i can think of. And except for the brake rotors, all of that s*** started after the warranty was up. Not like Mazda cares to fix any of it. However, the P5 is a great car. Go for it if you can.

90K and no problems here other than a slightly slipping auto tranny(for about the last 20K). And I drive hard!

The list of problems with mine
1. Rattling in engine- Short Block replaced under warranty
2. Heater went out- Replaced under warranty
3. Alarm system went out- Replaced under warranty
4. A/C went out- Replaced compressor under warranty
5. Rattling in engine- Replaced entire engine under warranty

Im praying that nothing else happens because i have no warranty now.

s***!I guess I've been lucky so far other than a faulty rear right door lock motor.I've been problem free..well cept for a stupid crack on the plexiglass on my dash. Not sure how to fix that!s***!

If you need the plexiglass that goes over the gague cluster. It's brand new
in the box.

I bought a replacement part from mazda and it turned out I didn't need the one that I bought. So, I have one unused in its original packaging from mazda.

I paid like $17 for it with tax and everything. If you want it, I'd take $15 shipping included.
