2002 ES black steering wheel installed

It's done! Well almost. I need to order the seats, shift knob, a trim piece for the glove box to put my new glove box on, another rear trim piece that never got shipped, and rear seatbelts.

Why did you put the 2.0 in there? Man if I was going through that much work I woulkd have dropped a BP in.

That is sick man! Congrats on getting it done, that looks like a ton of work.

I have an 03.5MSP knob on order. I'm hoping to get either some ES seats or MP3 seats. I have two people I'm in contact with. I'd love to do racing seats but for a good brand, they are expensive!

The sound deadening helps a lot. Once I close the door, I can barely hear the outside. Road noise is quieter around town (much more "muted"), but on the highway on really coarse roads, not much of a difference in all honesty. There's a strip of I-10 I drive on when I travel to Gainesville that absolutely sucks ass right before the I-75 interchange. If you live in North Florida and have been on I-10, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

There are a few minor problems (rattles) I need to work out, and a few trim pieces I need to order. I just realized the driver's side B-pillar trim is snapped. You can see it in the picture.

FYI, for you 99/00 people:
This swap will be a tad more difficult because of the differences with the HVAC controls. The controls/electronics for one are totally different, and the recirculation function is motor-operated instead of cable-operated. It's not just a matter of swapping your existing dash harness with a 01+ harness (which, BTW, is ~900 dollars in itself), unless you are experienced with custom wiring. Swapping to the new harness means a new cooling unit relay, sensor, and the multitude of other minor differences between the early/later 3rd gen cars. For all intents and purposes, my car is essentially a 2001 now. It has a swapped in 2.0L and manual tranny, EVERY WIRING HARNESS bow to stern changed, 01+ ES interior, and electronics. Just food for thought for those of you interested in doing the same thing.

If you early 3rd genners still want to do the swap to black, you can forego everything I just said if you don't plan on changing out the center pod. Just leave that piece be and use every other late 3rd gen part - or better yet, swap to the 98-00 JDM Sport20 Familia center pod. Check on Edwin's FAQ for the part number. It fits right in and should work with the manual recirculation lever.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. This project took a long time for me to do but in the end, it was well worth the effort. I don't believe I am ever going to sell this car, it's my baby.

damn The car looks great, clean and simple, all factory...One of the best pro in MSprotege..

meh... the 03 MSP sparco shift knob is way better quality and style

I agree, I went to a lot of work to get that one over the 03.5.

Neither Sparco nor Mazda carries it, so you have to buy from MSP owners.

No doubt! major props Negatize for all the hard work you have been putting into your car. Simply an amazing transformation.

I took some "clean" pictures today. I am still waiting on the bracket that screws onto my passenger side dash so I can put my glovebox on and my shift knob as well. BAH.

I got my first thing done for my interior swap project, a 2002+ Black 3-spoke steering wheel.

The new wheel is much thicker and meatier. I especially like the "feel" at the 9 and 3 position where the dimpled areas are. Old wheel was rubbish.
what a diference nice job.

damn those wheels look amazing.

Edit: and by wheels I mean the BBS wheels :)

I'd love to get my hands on the 04/05 Mazdaspeed Miata steering wheel. Same style (so airbag should swap) but with red stitching. I don't know if it's the nicer leather. I wish my leather wasn't so shiny.

How difficult was it to remove the carpeting and lay the Dynamat down? I really need to add some sound deadening material, for stereo purposes, and to help combat the high level of resonance that my CS exhaust produces on the freeway, and I'm thinking of ripping the door panels off, as well as the carpeting to lay some Dynamat.

You'll have to remove the seats, all the trim pieces, seat belts, center console, and rear seat lower cusions. You are *supposed* to remove the dash because the carpet has a tiny 1" wide section that wraps around the firewall and center tunnel, but it's easier if you cut the carpet right there instead.

I have a slight problem. I can't fit my new glove box on because the new dash is slightly different. Here's some pics to show what I am talking about.

I had the same bracket on my old dash. It didn't fit. So, I looked up the parts catalog and ordered a new bracket. It's exactly the same as my old one. What the hell! I can't put my glove box on until I get the correct bracket.

Does anyone have pics of their 01+ with the glovebox removed so I can see what it's supposed to look like?
