2002 ES 2.0 Performance Upgrade

I have read and heard many different things on this topic, and seen some threads on this forum, but they do not exactly answer my questions. I currently have a 2002 Protege 2.0 ES Automatic. I want to improve its performance. I have been thinking about adding a turbo. I have read that a turbo does not help nearly as much on an auto 2.0 than 1.6 man. Any thoughts? I would not mind selling my car for another protege, but I do not want to pay for a Mazdaspeed. What other options are there for improving its performance??

There are boosted auto's. A performance transmission shop should be able to source performance clutches and springs and check balls for the valve body. You don't need to sell you 2.0L to go to a 1.6. No point and you will need to do the same things to the 1.6 as the 2.0L.
