2001 Mazda Protege 2.0 ES
I have a 2001 Mazda Protege ES 2.0 5 speed. I was pulling off the highway into the city and came to a red light. My car stalled and would not restart. I towed it back to my shop and began troubleshooting. Fuel pressure seems good. Spark seems good. Was just cranking over then the cranking sound changed. Still wont start. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong or what I might test next? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here's the big list...
(I assume you've got the FS engine??)

I guessing a broken/disconnected wire or failed crank/cam sensor.

Check Crank sensor and Cam sensor for interference or damage. Rust can also be stuck to sensor and bridge the gap between tone wheel teeth, which can cause loss of signal.

Check timing belt. I believe it should've been changed at 90,000 miles.

If the sound of the engine cranking changed I would agree with Dersulzola your timing belt may have stripped a tooth or broken.
