2001 protege ES - remove radio

Ok I know this has been discussed a bit, and I searched the forums and general internet but couldn't find much to help me.

I need to remove the radio to install an AuxMod Basic. I am trying to remove the cover but I'm stuck on that, I figured out that I had to remove the heat/AC controls and then I was able to pry the panel off with a flathead screwdriver, but there is at least two wires connected that is holding me back from taking off the entire panel. There is a wire going to the emergency lights button and a wire going to the heat/AC controls. I can't, for the life of me, remove the wire from the emergency lights button or the other wire. Can anyone offer me some help.

Also, I would like to know if I'm on the right track here. Do I even need to remove the entire face panel in order to get the radio out or is there a simpler way of doing it.

If someone can offer of step by step instructions on how to remove from the beginning to end that would be great. I have those tools to remove the actual radio unit, but I haven't got that far to need them yet.

help (confused)

When I swapped mine out, I didn't have to completely remove the cover. All I did disconnect the climate control cables and then I popped off the cover( i assume you mean the plastic coverring that surrounds the radio,ac controls and vents). I was then able to get just enough room to remove the radio and reinstall the new one

I was never able to remove the emergency lights wire either, so I pretty much just popped the cover off as much as I could and just moved things around enough until I was able to yank the radio out. I do remember it being a pain. I remember having to remove the glove box in order to be able to reach the back, but that might have been for when I installed the new unit.
It's been a while since I removed the factory radio, so I don't really remember too much detail. sorry can't be of more help

hmm ok. I'll try it out. btw, is that hypno-toad??! haha love it.

If anyone else has step-by-step instructions, that would be great.

HAHAHA

ok back to business: i tried to do what you said but i cant figure out where the radio removal tools go> i don"t see two holes to put the tools in>

diagrams would be awesome if anyone can help>

Here you go, these should hep you out. You don't have to remove teh surround to remove the radio. (wiggle)

Edit: As for the holes, you need to remove the covers from the sides of the radio 1st. I'd tape up the surround if you decide to pull the radio with the surround in place. I did that when I removed my friends radio and it saved my ass from scratching the hell out of her radio surround when the tools slipped.

great oden's raven!! thanks you! The second pdf may be a little unnecessary for what I need to do. My mechanic removed the radio without having to go into the glove box. I just don't remember exactly what he did.

I included the second pdf to show you what you need to do to get the radio and ac surround off (ac cables). (dunno)

well, the first pdf says "the first thing you do is remove the little side panels on the sides of the units fact to expose the holes which the tools fit into...."

Currently I have the entire face hanging off, because I couldn't seem to separate the side panels from the entire panel. Any idea how to do that?

The side panels are snapped into the radio, they're not connected to or part of the surround.

If you look at the last picture in the 1st pdf file you should be able to make out where the holes are and then get a better feel for where the side panels are, basically the extreme left and right of the radio.

You should remove the frame first.
