2000 Protege Engine Vibration at Idle

:
2000 Mazda Protege
Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the Mazda family and just purchased a 2000 Protege with 120,000 miles. Great car so far. I have a quick question I am hoping someone can help with.

At idle speeds (approx 800 rpms) the Engine vibrates. Anything above 1000 RPMs and the engine runs smooth with no vibration. It doesn't appear to make a difference if the car is in Park, Reverse, Neutral, or Drive and it doesn't appear to make a difference if the A/C is on.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the boards, and to the mazda community.

The vibrations at idle are proabably related to a rough idle in the motor. There's a few things you can do to try to remedy this. First, one of the easiest things to do (and quite effective for the most part) is to clean your EGR valve, here's a link to the how-to: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94788

Try doing a search for "rough idle" & "erratic idle" you should find a good amount of info on these forums.

Also, your motor/transmission mounts may be getting worn out as well. Good luck!

It sounds like it could be the motor mounts/tranny mounts. I have a 2000 Protege also, and just had to change out all 4 of my mounts as well. The rear mount is a PAIN IN THE @SS....so good luck with it. If you have about 3 feet of extensions, you can get to it from the top of the car.

Well, there is a difference between: vibrations, Vibrations, and "vibrations"...

My 1.8 protege vibrates a bit unpleasantly at idle, but just not that much to make me do anything about it... The steering wheel shakes a little bit, but, all in all, I think that your (and mine) engine mounts are getting old (rubber material fatigue), hence the vibrations...

check the air intake tube it might have a rip or hole taking in to much air that would cause heavy vibrations when the car is stopped. this happened the my car and it got worse and worse. just make sure to check it out. if its not that than its just the way the car runs when idle-ed. my car is smooth as butter. 2000 mazda protege es with about 104,000 miles on it.
