2 Swap TII tranny with 6speed RX8 tran...

How difficult would it be to fit? Is it doable?

My TII has grinding from 4th to 5th gear... seems like it'd be a pain to rebuild the tranny trying to fix it- easier to replace... so- why not upgrade. Any suggestions?

Its not really an upgrade and it doesn't really fit either...I believe the rx8 6 speed is shorter than the rx7 transmissions. I also believe in my reading I have come across hearing the rx8 trans is really strong especially compared to a tii trans. I would stick with the tii trans or just rebuild it.

Ok. Does anyone know what generally causes these trans to grind from 4th to 5th gear over time? One mechanic told me it was probably a worn synchro. In wich case... is it better to swap or rebuild?

Why not just replace the worn parts??

Well, in my mind there's the work of taking it out and putting it back in vs taking it out- mangling it up looking for something, putting it back together and Then putting it back in... because I have no experience with transmissions, mechanically speaking. and.. from what I gather it's about the same cost either way if I have the shop do it: parts vs. labor. That is, unless it's easy to find and replace whatever part it is that's worn... which is why i'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the 4th to 5th gear grinding problem-- and what the solution was.

...oh. ther'es one other reason I forgot to mention- although it may not seem like that big of a deal, but someone jb-welded (or something) the shifter knob on, and there's a leak in the boot material so I get engine bay air up through it. So... you can see my dilemna. I figured if I could find another tran reasonably, it'd save a lot of trouble.

When was the last time you replaced the fluid in the trans? And with what kind of fluid?

If a part is bad its most likely going to be the 5th gear synchro which really isn't hard to get at in this trans but I can understand why you wouldn't want to do it without the experience or money. A better bet would be to just pick up another tii trans and throw it in there. At your liesure fix your old trans so you can have a spare and learn how to work on a trans as well. I have a link for the factory service manual that walks you through step by step on disassembling the transmission.

I would stick with the TII gearbox. If you are not comfortable in taking apart the transmission I am not sure installing a transmission from an Rx8 would be much easier. With the service book you can at least get a how to do it for the transmission repair.

The rubber boots for the shifter is something you can get from the dealer or mazdatrix.

the t2 tranny is a lot stronger than the rx8 tranny. i think i remember seeing someone do that swap, but i don't remember where. i will try to find it.

some of the FD guys who went from auto to manual used the t2 tranny for the swap. i know one locally who did that actually.
