2016~2023: 2.5T engine replacement cost?

Hey guys, bought a 2017 cx9 with approx 77k kms on odo. I did buy it through cpo so definitely have the powertrain warranty for the next 2 years. I was wondering about after that. Just in case if the engine goes bad, what is the approx cost of replacing it, like the total cost. If that happens I would rather replace the engine than to sell and buy a different car. Absolutely love the way it drives. Former toyota owner.

Hi @sy11787, it would depend on how you go about replacing the engine. For example, it would be more expensive to have the engine replacement done by the dealer, because their shop rates are higher and you would probably be getting a brand new engine. I would guess $5-7k USD from the dealer. However, if you were to go with an independent shop and a used "junkyard" motor, you would probably be able to get it done for a lot less, maybe $2-4k.

Each option comes with it's own pros and cons. Dealer option means you get a brand new engine and a 1 year warranty (I think), but it's also really expensive, and you could be waiting a long time due to shipping/supply issues. There is also a reported oil consumption issue with the new 2.5T engine. Indie shop option can save you money, but you have to source the engine and find a reputable shop. Also, it's possible that you may have the same issue down the road with the junkyard engine as it likely won't be a newer engine. You also probably won't get a very good warranty through the indie shop.

Sorry I can't be more specific. But I know a couple of members here were nice enough to mention what they paid, and I think one of them even posted a picture of the invoice in one of the threads.

Thank you buddy! That is super helpful. I have usually kept all my cars for a long time and that response is super helpful in deciding what to do once the warranty is over, how the used car market is at that time. Secretly I wish that if it has to happen, it better happen during the warranty period. I absolutely love the low end torque and suspension on cx9. And i definitely do not miss my previous diesels.
Thank you again for the detailed info.
