The auto section in my local paper stated that the 2014 model year CX5 will offer the 2.5L engine in January. I am not sure it is the standard 2.5 or a SkyActive 2.5. version.

Yes, numerous threads here have Mazda stating 2.5L to be Skyactiv. CX-5 is first model with complete suite of Skyactiv technologies, including all engine offerings both current and future.

Setting aside torque benefits and a more robust engine, considering the cost gap between regular unleaded and diesel fuel and the price premium one pays for the potential 2.2d to come out... is the engine worth it say in a span of 4 years, 6 years, 10 years? A mechanic told me yes perhaps 5-10 years ago. Any input?

That's math only you can do right since you know the number of miles you drive annually. The price premium for the diesel is still unknown, maybe it will be $2K to $3K.
