2.3 vs 2.0 engine

First off, I apologize if this topic has been covered....and it seems that it probably has, but I did a search and couldn't find anything.

College graduation is around the corner and though my protege has treated me well, I'm looking forward to trading her in for a 3 hatch. Mazdaspeed 3 is out of the question because of price and insurance, but I should be able to have enough to choose between the 2.0 or 2.3 engines.

My question is: is either of these engines better for mod purposes than the other? I really don't care about the other bells and whistles that come along with the 2.3 engine trim....they'd be nice for sure though. I have plans for modding in the future.....turbo, full exhaust, etc. etc. etc. with a focus on performance and I'm more concerned with having a good starting point. I know with the proteges the 1.8s seemed to respond better than the 2.0s to mods and I was wondering how these two engines compared.

Well if you want a hatch your getting the 2.3L motor, so by your prerequisites the engine size is a moot point.

LMAO - I was about to say the same thing.

Hatch = 2.3l 4 cylinder only

Sedan = i-2.0 4 cyl. s-2.3l 4 cyl.

yeah, sorry, should have specified.....I'd prefer a hatch but am taking the difference in engine into consideration....sorry for the confusion

yeah, go with the 2.3l. This comes from an ex-2.0L owner who raced a 2.3L and got whooped by a lenght. Yuck.
