1st to 2nd "grinding"

so i noticed somewhat recently that occasionally when I shift from 1st to second I will get a very short grinding feeling. Its not like you would get when you just dont push in the clutch enough and get a grind that way, it feels different. It is a sporadic thing that would happen whether I shift real fast or even take my time doing a slow shift. At all times the clutch is all the way to the floor and it doesnt happen during any other shifts.

Also, I changed my gear oil with MT-90 back in december, so like 12k miles ago.

You could try bleeding your clutch or check motor mounts a bad one could cause it. But worst case its the syncros

It coudl also be y oru 2nd to 3rd gear selector hub(I think thats what its called). bad motor mounts normally affect 2nd to 3rd gear shifting but i guess it can affect others as well.

so since im not an expert on the drivetrain, if i have a shot syncro for 1st to 2nd, what does that mean for my tranny/wallet?

check the mounts and check the fluid level in the tranny... if its topped off then you could try and drain some and go buy SYNCRO MESH and put that in and see if it helps any

How does the motor mount effect 2-3rd shifting. Ive been getting a bit of a grind into third.

poor alignment of the shifter to the motor.

If its old and crusty fluid it will help but if not then he has other issues.

If it is a synchro, try hesitating slightly while between 1 and 2 - like a second. This allows the rotation of the 2 shafts to roughly match up so the synchro does very little work to get the dogs to synch up & mesh without clashing.

I have been doing that with slow shirts and it could still happen. Its such a rare occurrence though, once maybe twice a week and I drive a fair amount every day.

Im beginning to fear that I messed something up when putting in the bronze-oil shifter bushings because it was really a tight fit to get the upper bushing into the fork and I had to do some pressing down to get it in enough that I could use the bolt for the remainder of it.

Its not the bronzoil bushings.. if it does it shifting really slow its more then likely syncros. Only way for sure is take it to a trans shop.

buy GM synchromesh tranny fluid. i had grinding as you described going into 2nd and 3rd occasionally. i switched to a synthetic 75w90 fluid and it got worse, then switched to GM synchromesh (and about 1/3 quart of lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer) and its been shifting butter smooth for 3 years now. a lot of people run just the synchromesh fludi without the Lucas, and its works just as good.

buy the fluid from and GM dealer i don't know about current prices but up in canada when i bought it it was 1/2 the price of redline.
