1991 323 Protege Starting Problem

First Off, my Protege was running fine. I started it up, went back in the house to get something that I had forgot, came out and the car was not running. It turns over but does not seem to fire. I have changed all the spark plug wires, rotor and distributor cap. I put in new plugs at Chritmas time, and they look fine, nothing unusual looking. Could it be my fuel filter? I just read a post that said if the filter was plugged, the dirty fuel would bypass the filter and clogg the injectors, is this true? I have had my 1991 323 Protege LX for 3 years now and it has been problem free, other than the usual replacement of brakes, tires, filters and plugs. This has me stumped!(uhm) It was not missing or running rough, it just stopped! Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated, Thank You in advance!

A dirty filter might allow dirty fuel to pass, but not BYPASS the filter. There is no bypass line around the filter.

smell gas on the sparkplugs? then it is getting fuel

Problem Solved!

Broken Timing Belt! I had already changed the plugs, wires and the rotar when I realized that the rotar did not turn when trying to start. Pulled the cover off and there it was broken in 3 pieces. Put a new belt in and it runs like a charm! Thank You to those of you who responded! I also changed the fuel filter while I was in there!(2thumbs)
