17" wheel advantages?

I've seen a lot of people say that 17" wheels are better for autocross. I understand the weight savings, but are there other advantages?

For instance, I think I've heard there are more (performance) tires available for 17" rims. Are they also cheaper?

Is the extra ~1/2" of sidewall (assuming the final total tire diameter is the same) going to change much?

There must be some disadvantages, what are some?

Advantage it will be cheaper.
Advantage better ride quality(softer ride).
Advantage more sidewall flex under acceleration(better bite).
Disadvantage more sidewall flex when cornering.

i dont think the sidewall has too much effect on braking, but the reduced rotating mass definitely will
