11psi - Clutch can't handle the torque

Ok, so I've had my ACT clutch for 28K miles or so now. I've been driving stick for 5 or 6 years and never had to replace a clutch. I had the ACT put in on because I knew the stock wouldn't handle boost.

I ran 8psi for the past 5 months or so, and had no real problems with the clutch...i felt it slip about twice in that time period, but that's all.;

2 weeks ago during the motor swap (when me and my mechanic were putting my new forged motor in), he inspected the clutch and was pleasantly suprised to see how much "meat" was still left on it.

2 nights ago, i cranked up the boost to 11psi, and did some 3rd gear pulls so I could tune it. After 6-10 pulls within 15 minutes, I tried one more pull...and the engine revved, but the car didn't accellerate. Tried it a few more times...same thing.

So I let it cool off overnight and tried again in the morning. Worked fine. But then after a half dozen pulls or so, same thing. Worst part is, I can't totally tune this thing until the clutch grabs all the time.

So now I'm faced with a dilemma. I have what APPEARS to be a clutch in good shape, as far as wear goes. So even if I replace it with the same ACT clutch, I'll probably have the same issue with it holding power. Now I COULD go with one of ACT's PUCK clutches, but then they're rough on the passengers, as they don't engage very smoothly.

I COULD go with a Clutchmasters clutch, but I've heard of more issues with them. I've HEARD that Exedy makes clutches for our cars, but I couldn'd find them anywhere. What other options do I have here?

On top of that, I just dropped a lot of coin with the motor swap, and my bank account is hating life right now. For money saving purposes, I'm half tempted to drop the tranny and replace the clutch in my garage, but I've never replaced a clutch, and doing one without a lift wouldn't make my life much more fun either. So unless someone is willing to help me out with the clutch (all the free pizza you can eat), I'll have to pay someone to install it.

Suggestions?

Just figured I'd add...i can drive the car normally. But as soon as i break 9psi or so, it all goes to hell in a handbasket.

I know of a place that sells exedy clutches that I can get you a great deal on. Pm me and ill give you the info on it. Its a PM sponsor, and they dont want the prices to be displayed publicly.

Which ACT clutch do you have? I used to have a Talon Tsi AWD running 17 psi with an ACT 2100 and had no problems.

Something just doesn't seem right. I don't think your clutch shouldd be slipping. Unless you drive pretty agressively on a daily basis.

get a Spec clutch....or see if ACT can make a Xtreme Pressure Plate with Ductile Face. Those hold up much better than the standard Heavy Duty plates.

isnt the exody clutch just another type of act cluth??
thats what i always thought they were..

I have heard good things about spec clutches..have you talked to pual? He just pulled out his clutch not to long ago! Also..i don't know how to do a clutch install..but would be willin to come down to check it out!

Anyone know anything about these?

http://www.speclutches.com/specMain.html

I called them up...

Stage 1 is organic
Stage 2 is Kevlar
Stage 3 is kevlar, puck, with springs in the disc for smoothness on the stret
Stage 4 is like stage 3, except w/o springs (so it's harsher)
I didn't even bother to ask about stage 5

I have the Stage 1 organic ACT clutch. But from what I hear, ACT is kind of random. Their DSM clutches are GREAT, and the WRX clutches are tranny killers. I haven't even driven the car really hard in awhile because of the winter weather, but even when I do drive hard, my shifts are quick and smooth.

Exedy is a totally different brand.

ive been working on my clutch/tranny since last friday.

hard stuff if you dont know what youre doing.

LOL, I love your "do not modify your car" tagline there. What issues have you run into so far? How are you doing it?

the exedy clutches are pretty much only stock replacement. you can check the site. http://www.daikin-clutch.com i think is the website. i had the newest exedy specific clutch catalog and it doesn't have proteges even listed. weird about the clutchmasters. most times i've seen the clutchmasters hold up far better then ACT's. search their lineup and do the usual research. most of them are still sprung so they'll be a little more streetable.

Damn, that sucks man.. sounds like when my CM stage 3 was failing.. after a beating it would slip then keep slipping, but the next day it would be fine untill the beating began. eventually it became a point where i couldnt even boost at all without it slipping.

I actually though my ACT was slipping the other day, but it was just crazy 2nd gear wheelspin @11psi.

I watched wagner do my clutch install, im glad i didnt attempt it on my own, but i think it would be do-able just put aside a weekend.

I hear your situation.. that is a real bummer. tough choice.. i was tempted to get a puck clutch just so i wouldnt have to worry, but i feel my tranny would hate me. I thin SXVIN got the stage 3 sprung SPEC clutch, but his car isnt running at the moment to hear how it is.

Well if you decide to do the clutch yourself, you know im down for helping. Air tools should be a must. (i got a compressor and ratchet) :)

Yeah, I've been considering the stage 3 spec. 349 ft/lbs should be more than I'll ever put out.

I didn't know you had a CM stage THREE clutch, i figured you just had the organic. Phuk. Guess that's off my list as well. Spec stage 3 is looking sweeter by the minute, I just hope it's not too harsh.

I appreciate your offer to help. If i decide to tackle it in the garage, I'll definitely give you a call. Roy (one of the guys from forcefed4) offer to lend a hand as well if I decide to pull it off in the garage. I'll keep you posted either way. thanks man.

I have the spec stage 2 and it's great. I haven't felt any other clutch in the protege, but I can tell you that it holds damn good. MPNick has been using these for years with no bad results. For the price and torque rating, you can't beat them.

Thats strange I have done 10psi for very long, kissing 11psi and no clutch slippage problem. Maybe Im not pushing the same Tq but, should be around your power curve.

It could be your Flywheel, did you machined it when you changed the clutch?
