I'm looking for a new transmission and I'd really like to be able to broaden my search from all the parts guys.

Can someone tell me definitively whether the 2.0L transmissions will fit on the 1.8L engines ?

I'd really like to know.

Thanks !

according to http://www.protegefaq.net/ the FP-DE and FS-DE use different transmissions. it seems that the FP and ZM use the same transmission though. As far as model number goes atleast.

Yes the 1.8 uses the F25M-R like the 1.6, the bell housing is different though. To use the the G series transmission found in the 2.0 you need to change the clutch (not sure if the flywheel will accept the other pressure plate) jackshaft and drive axles.

That sucks because I can get a P5 transmission with 72K on it for 200$ but the cheapest 1.8L I can find right now is 450$ with 110K

sucks that mazda won't sell you a full manual transmission either - you have to buy it gear by gear.

The auto transmissions they'll sell you though..:(

You probally want to replace all those parts anyway as apart of regular maintiance I'd go for the g series

What went kablamo in your tranny?

Shop says at least one of the bearings, including the one on the input shaft, is damaged.

I was quoted 900 to rebuild or 1600 to replace it. That's kind of pricey for anyone, especially a university student.

It sucks.

The guy that's walking me through it had a 1.6L protege. Bought a 1.8L engine and fit a 2L transmission on it. He didn't change anything other than the clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel.

I picked up the MSP axles just in case.
