1997 mazda protege
hey i have a quick question-i currently own a 97 1.5 protege-and i wanna get more power so i was gonna buy a second gen with a 1.8 but ive heard that a 2.0 was better-im on a tight bugit and a 2.0 would mean a third gen an more money what is my best option?

1.8 ltres,it fits right in,not the 2.0l,you ll need modifications to fit that in,get the 1.8,you re gonna be satisfied...

so u think i should jus put a 1.8 in an dont worry about gettin a new car? Does the 1.8 fit the transmission of the 1.5 or am i going to have to replace that too?

if you can get a good condition 1.8,take it and dont worry, its one of the best engines mazda has made in theyre history, but there are two engine,1.8 single cam,and 1.8 twin cam,i d say look for the twin cam,if you plan on getting more revs, and power, there was also a 1.8 bpt, wich was turbo, but extremely rare,so...

for the tranny, well i am really not sure if yours fit,but probably somoene here knows about it..

Mine is 1.8 DOHC,good enough~
If you wanna replace the engine, why not just go get an other car?

yea thats what i was thinking-i just wasnt sure because changing to a bigger engine would meen i would hafta change the trans. right?

actually on a second thought-would you suggest a new ECU or a used one from a parts car-would that affect the quality? if anyone has any ideas thanks in advance

I will suggest the used one~

Also when you buy the 1.8, you can ask the seller for the ecu, they always give it for free. Or you can say "it should be a set"~

oh ok thanks for the advise-would you suggest buying from a private owner like a used one, or a brand new one from a dealer of some sort?

my uncle in SF is a jdm engine dealer~

He said,if I replace the engine w/ labour is olny around $1K~

honestly... you wont be making that much power putting in an engine thats still a sub 100 hp engine. you might as well buy a new used car for the price its going to cost you to do the swap and for the engine. the fs engines dont make alot of power...

but isnt a 1.8 turbo friendly? i would like a newer protege with a 2.0(maybe a 2001 es) but being in college rite now i really cant afford it-as it is my protege now hasnt broken 81000 miles yet-you really think im not gonna get a real diverence in power? (i appreciate all the help im gettin on this thread by the way)

yea i know it has alot left in it but i feel like i want/need more power lol i could use that lack of miles for a trade-in plus, a 2001 es like i was thinking is about 5000-and that kinda hard to come up with...i guess the summers coming up lol-i'll be working hard
