Mazda Protege 1.6L '99 LX
hi,I got a Protege 1.6L LX 2000, I tried a custom intake that look like simota's one (2.5" same as the stock) but since I turned on the car I could see the problems. It seems that there's too much air flowing trough the engine and the car turn off by itself. Someone told me that can be the MAF sensor.
What do you think,?
What should I do? I mean I really wanna get the CAI

I have a CEL and when I had it scanned, I got 3 codes: 1) Wideband O2 sensor, Running too Lean, 2) Misfire Cylinder 3 and 3) Faulty EGR Valve. Excessive Airflow.

What O2 sensor do I need to replace? The one by the exhaust manifold or the one back by my cat? Would replacing my spark plugs and wires and swapping out my bad EGR valve fix the problems my car is having? Im having hesitation and buckin problems with some slight "pinging"/backfiring . All this is on a 1.6 liter ZM-DE with Injen CAI. Would it be benefitial to swap out the MAF filter for the Toyota Celica GT-S maf as well?

For the misfire on cyc 3, check your spark plug, and wires on that cyclinder and the spark coils. It usually is the wire not make a good contact. I've that that problem before.

Change the O2 on the exhaust mani.

Is your are a california edition protege? Non cali proteges dont have egr values.

Doubt the celica maf will do much, but guess you can try it.

Im going to change out the plugs and plug wires, so that'll take care of the misfire. So thats not a problem. My main concern is the O2 and MAF sensors. I was told by Witchdoctor that because of the bigger CAI piping, the readings of the MAF sensor are screwed up. Now, because the MAF is screwed up, my O2 sensor is affected and Im running lean. My question is, if I replace the MAF with the one from the Celica GTS (which supposedly compensates for the bigger CAI piping, do I still need to replace the O2 sensor?

And to answer your other question, no I don't have a California edition Protege. Mine has the EGR valve because why else would I be getting a CEL code, "Excesssive Airflow; Faulty EGR valve"" if my car didn't have an EGR valve to begin with?

If you're going to change to the celica Maf, hold off on changing the O2 sensor. Install that MAF, reset the ecu, drive for a few days and see if you still throw the cel.

if your car isn't california emission then it should not have an egr, thats weird. you can see if you have one, it is under the intake manifold. But most likely the egr fault code is due to the MAF on the bigger piping.

I have the Celica GTS MAF on my 2000 protege and i have no hesitation. The Cosmo Racing CAI is a 2.5" piping and that intake sounds great too!!!
