1.6 manual transmission help/suggestions

Hey everyone,

I have a manual tranny on my 1.6 (and 80,000 km), it started making a little bit of noise when I accelerate from rest through first. Other gears are fine. I went to get it checked out, and two different places told me there is a problem with the transmission - but they can't determine the exact problem unless they open it up. Mazda said it'd be minimum 6hrs (x $90 = $540) so I'm kindof going around just to see what my options are.

So far:
- possible rebuild of the tranny (either at dealer or other garage)
- finding a used tranny from scrap/parts sources
- find a used tranny from a different car/year that fits my '00 1.6 ?
- find aftermarket gears/trannies to improve my faulty tranny
- leave it alone

I'm worried because this could end up costing lots of $$$. And I need this car to get to work so I can bring home small amounts of $$$. Any thoughts greatly appreciated - Thanks!

well lets go down the list, a rebuild depending on where u go will be cheaper.
finding a used tranny and swaping i yourself or having a friend help that knows what they are doing will be the cheapest.
without custom fabrication the only tranny that fits the 1.6l is the one it comes with.
there are no gears made aftermarket for the 1.6l tranny(if im wrong someone tell me i will purchase those gears lol)
leave it alone is good until something really breaks.

I had to replace my tranny last october $1300 total with a used tranny.

my differential went and took out 2nd 4th and reverse, not really any signs for me, it just popped out of 4th one night going up a hill and never went back in. it was a fun week without those gears.

I had mine replaced with a used tranny and it cost me about $1100, that was including new axles because the damn mechanic didn't know what it was until we removed the tranny oil, it was full of tiny metal parts. it was the differential too but no gears.

it was more expensive to buy the differential in mazda than getting a good used tranny.
