So whats the best intake for a 1.6L Protege Engine?
SRI or CAI. ive been looking but i dnt know anything about any of them. so if people could help me out, that'd be great(scratch)

there are no good CAI for the 1.6L. But simota and weapon-r r the best bets for function. Search more, you will see that there is alot of porblems with the 1.6L with intakes. Search about the celica MAF too.

for the 1.6l do not expect gains from the intake, unless you want a gain in sound. Injen CAI if you can find one is very nice for looks and sounds amazing. However, with the stock MAF expect hesitation, jumpy idle, and possibly a CEL. Cosmo makes a CAI which looks very similar to the Injen, but I can not vouch for the quality of it. If you go with a cold air intake you may want to invest in an AEM DryFlow Filter seeing how where the filter is placed it is very likely that water will reach the filter. And $40 now is better then $2,000+ for a new motor later.

Link to the other MAF option, which will allow you to use CAI that are bigger then 2.25" in diameter:

as for short rams I think red99pro has you covered for your options.

the AEM dryflow has nothing to do with whether or not it sucks up water.

dryflow refers to the fact you dont have to oil the filter for it to catch the particles in the air.

hydrolocking your engine would be extremely hard, you would literally have to drive through a 2 foot puddle

have u ever submerged a dryflow filter then a crap one from like autozone, very little water comes into the dryflow filter and takes much longer so it does make a difference. The only reason why you dont have to oil it is because its is made of a synthetic material that repels water and cleans much easier as is. Also, if you live in the NE or anywhere that gets snow and they salt the rods, good luck with a crap filter that has metal holding it together, it will last maybe a month before the coating wears off the metal it rusts and starts falling apart.

intakes on a 1.6 are a complete waste of money. you won't notice any gains. some intakes are 2.5", our stock pipe is 2.25" meaning you'll run into issues (hesitating, jerking, rough idle and cel P0171). some people swear a celica maf solves the issue but even if it does that's more money on top of the price of the intake and for what gains? nothing.

redpro your about the only one ever to get a larger intake to work properly with a mazda maf. Honestly the celica one is a good deal. It runs great with a 2.5" intake and you dont have to mess with different tricks and what ever with seals. If you want to keep the mazda MAF just make or buy an intake(simota) that is 2.25". Otherwise upgrade the MAF and it will run properly.

i do have a celica MAF now for months.

The intake i have is a weapon-r. i believe its 2.25, and i also had 2 stacks of inner tube patches cut over it.

I'm not sure if this should be posted in the How To section but if it needs to be moved, go ahead.

When I first tried to install a Spectre short ram intake (3" diameter) from O'Reillys on my 1.6L, I had a great deal of trouble even getting the car to run or even start at all. When I tried to start it up, it would sputter and die like it was getting too much air. After much experimenting, i gave up and put the stock intake system back on. I later figured out that you could drop a cone filter in right before the stock air-box and gut out the filter to make it work. While this made me happier, it just didn't quite do it so i started to so some more research about the MAF and pipe sizes. I discovered that the MAF for the 1.6L is looking for a 2.25 inch pipe diameter. So I went down to Home Depot and bought some rubber tubing with an outer diameter of 3" and an inner diameter of 2.25". Then i slipped it inside of the MAF adapter i bought from O'Reillys and cut out a hole for the MAF. I put the filter back on, cranked it up and it worked perfectly. So i went back to O'Reillys and bought some more tubing to convert it to a CAI and ran it down into the fender well. It has worked well for months now. I am sad to say however that the hesitation issue around 2500 and 3500 rpm was not resolved but i could notice an overall increase in performance. I just purchased an Injen CAI from another member on the forum and I plan to try the same thing on the Injen. Ill post pictures of both set ups when I get a chance. If you decide to try this, let me know how it works for you. If this works on the Injen, it would open up a bunch of different intakes for the 1.6L guys. Also, a couple weeks ago I installed the axle back exhaust off the MSP (not the racing beat one). Perfect fit, great look, awesome sound, and a noticeable performance gain. I think it reduced some of the back pressure created by the CAI. Anyway, hopefully this simple intake mod will work for you guys. Good luck, and let me know your results. :)

My custom CAI works fine - 2.25" pipe for MAF adaptor and 3" pipe for rest. I havent experienced any hesitation or whatsoever. The only issue is that it screams at full throttle.
