After some further consideration, I decided to go with the Mazda.

I will take delivery next week!

Pics forthcoming

Yeah its slower and costs more! :D

To be honest I still have a soft spot in my heart for the 02 WRX and first 03(?) STI. Nothin but fast. No frills, to extras no nothin, just fast. The new STI has soo many options its like the friggin shuttle.

I just want to go fast.... or should i say 'go zoom zoom!'.

5speed trany is s***....you an find 08 sti with bbs package i saw that it had 500 miles and it was 28k so its a ******* good deal...

Ultimately there were a number of factors that swayed me to just go with the MS3.

The MS3 trans and the driving experience was just much more impressive. I'll get used to the sporty exhaust and I'm sure the car will pull harder in first and second when the weather warms up around here and the tires start to grip asphalt that is not covered in salt residue.

The Mazda dealer has the MS3 on the lot in the color I wanted with the options I wanted, and the price is very good. The Subaru dealer does not have any 5 door WRX and would have to order one for me or get it from another dealer someplace else.

The Mazda has more cargo space, more pull once you're rolling, better brakes, amazing handling .........it just feels more fun.

The WRX felt a bit "rubbery" in comparison.

Since wheels for it are my next decision, I am moving to that thread group.

Can't wait to have it in my garage and make unecessary trips to the store.

you really think it's THAT different than an MS3 interior? as far as im concerned they're pretty comparable

Yeah, if by comparable you mean that the car has a steering wheel, seats, a shifter, and air vents, then yes they are comparable.

They look NOTHING alike.

I been thinking about trading my 08.5 MS3 in on a 09 wrx sedan. Doing some research I found there are a lot of them spinning bearings so I think I'll hold out for a while until SOA gets it sorted out.. If I had read more about the MS3 I probably wouldn't have bought it either knowing what I know now

We got a list (big one unfortunately) on NASIOC and ALL of the spun bearings problems with the engines happened to cars with a built date of 07/08 and 08/08. I have a built date of 10/08 on mine and I'm not too worried for now. Sad though...

Then again, many many many people love the boxer burble.

I ******* hate the boxer burble. I tell my subaru friend that they all ******* sound THE SAME. Everytime they throw an angled exhaust on a subaru it sounds the same. From around the corner you know exaclty whats about to come around. They are so played out.

It's nice when people dont expect it from a speed3, But if I hear the boxer burble I can tell exactly what it is before I even see it. No big surprise when its yet another wrx or sti with an angled exhaust out the back.

You brought up a good point with being in Michigan and having rain and snow, the wrx wouldbe much better for you in that. For me living in Los Angeles the speed3 is the betetr choice, but for you I'd say the awd is probably going to be the better bet for you for where you live. And you said you're going to have to keep the car at least 5 years.

Go sit in one and you'll immediately notice the difference. The new Subaru interiors just scream of cheapness whereas the Mazda3/MS3 interior, although no Audi, looks to be of higher quality considering the price of the car.

yes. our int. is not nearly as plain, boring and uninspiring as the subbies int. if it wasnt for the subbie badge iwould think that was the inside of a older hyundai or something. it just looks cheap. flat out

plus i have a 09(piano black int.) so it mos def look classier than the subbies. the piano black looks classier than the 08 MS3 interior.

Seriously the interior on the Subie is good the way it is. No need to bash it. It is actually very similar to the Speed3 and I know because I owned one. Seats are pretty confortable, have the WRX on the head rest like the MS3, colors are fairly similar and design. What I dont have on the Subaru is the "brand or model" on the cluster and the polished step plates.

But...

I have 2 front heated seats (2 intensity levels), a nice moonroof with 1 push to open and 1 push to close (no more holding down bs to close it) and I have absolutely NO INTERIOR SOUNDS, even at -20*C (yeah Canada). For those who drive a Speed3 in the winter or cold temperatures, you know what kind of rattling and squeeking you have. At least the "cheap" interior (if you say so but is perfectly fine with me) doest make a sound. It was one of the main factors beleive it or not why I got rid of the Speed3. Sucks for winter and the noises are like I was driving a 1990 old beater which was not acceptable. But an awesome summer car.

i dont see similarities between the two. exterior has more incommon than the interior does. the subbies int. puts me in mind of cars from the 90ls. like a old hyundai or something

i honestly don't see that at all. fitment is another story but as far as i'm concerned they're both decent econo car interiors, but still econo car interiors. the gauge cluster on the rex is probably the worst part and the MS3 seats are nicer but everything else looks to be in the same class to me. crappy 2 tone plastic across the dash, ugly climate control knobs with silver surrounds, boring 3 spoke steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, vents. i'd give the MS3 the nod in the gauge cluster and the seats (though 2 level heat is very nice), the rest is a wash. for my scale of things anyways.
