08 Rear Air Is COOL ONLY

Noted in the other thread, but probably worth a thread of it's own.

The rear air on the 08's is for cool air only. No heat. None.

It snowed here on the weekend, so Mrs SparkyBhoy thought that she would put some heat through to the kids in the 2nd row. She said "The rear air isn't working properly". So I went for a look, and found out that it is cool only. I never noticed it the other night.

If you look closely at the picture, you will see noted above the Off/Low/High controls the little text (same colour as the rest of the grey plastic) that says "Cool Air"

Interesting...

The MPV's were available with:
1. no rear ventilation, no rear vents;
2. rear air-con only, ceiling vents only (like mine, originally sold in GA);
3. rear heat only, floor vents only;
4. both heat and air-con, ventapalooza!

I thought we had rear heat, but on a trip home to Virginia last Winter, I accidentally gave my mother-in-law the (literal) cold shoulder when I tried to warm up the back of the van for her!

I'm guessing though, that if you're in Canada, and got cold air only, they just aren't offering rear heat!

Hmm that sucks....or blows....depending on how you look at it.
I guess to offer rear heat they would have to install a rear heater core and there probably wasn't space for that. You can always buy one of those heaters that plug into the cig-lighter. Anyway, on the bright side at least your rear seaters will be cooler in summer.

Our 5 is sitting at home right now, and I'm not at home, so pardon my ignorance. But doesn't the 5 have the heating ducts under the front seats? Perhaps this is why the rear seat vent doesn't blow cool air.

But yeah, our '04 MPV ES had rear seat temp controls. Pretty sweet setup.

Yes, that's where the heater ducts (still) are. Warm air rises, so that's the location where they would work the best.

I don't see this as surprising as the 5 is a smaller van and has limited space for an additional full HVAC system like minivans are... yet still, the 5 is also a simpler vehicle than minivans... so if you look at vans from 10 years ago, they too only had rear A/C only where it was equiped with a dual system... look at the toyota van and previa, they only had rear A/C, no rear heat!

Should have mentioned that it was the centre console only (apols for any confusion) that I was referring to.

There are indeed ducts under the driver and front passenger seats for heat, but I had figured that the centre console was HVAC not just AC.

Doesn't mean that I'm sending it back though ;)

The rear duct option isn't available in Sweden (maybe you don't care about that (thought)). It looks like were getting the "old" center console with the closable cd-storage box. I looked at the NA console and it goes a little bit further back than the old console. Anyway, if it only blows cold air it doesn't do much help to me. Also, the leg space for the person sitting in the third seat on the second row wouldn't be so great with the NA center console. Actually, I'm happy without it if it only blows cold air.

Although, it would be interesting to know if it blows cooled air from the AC or if it only blows "fresh" air from outside the car (maybe not interesting for me but for all of you in NA).

it is interesting because the controls for heat/cool is at the console. So it is in the console where you decide if you want hot air or cool air going down the ducts going to the rear... So, the controls at the middle can't do anything if the console vanes send hot or cool air down the that duct.. is it possible the controls in the middle duct is for 'air flow'?

Does any one have a service manual for 2006-7 MZ5 or even 2008?

I thought rear HVAC was simply an additional air duct tapped in to condenser/heater housing (which means you can get both heat and A/C).

The manual states that the rear air works only when auto climate control, air conditioning, is selected at the console.

The rear fans are then turned on by either the console, or by pressing the low or high setting on the control in the rear.

So no warm air from rear HVAC when front temp is set to hot (regardless direction)?

I guess it's a box with condenser on it and a fan. Then they attached lines going to the main ac unit. probably drain hose too. Cheaper than redesigning the existing air duct layout. I imagine a future retrofit will be available for those with older mazda5.

^^^Just what I wanted to hear! Are you guys at Montgomery Mazda paying attention? I'll take one complete 08 center console and all associated drain and feed lines ASAP. PS do I get a "its colder than witch tits right now" discount? LOL

Well from what I read about the complains, it was that it took too long to cool the car down and that vents in the back would help, I never saw a complaint about it heating up the back.

Was just about to mention that. We complained about rear cooling, Mazda listened and took care of it for us. ;)

as new owner of 08 M5, i am here to confirm that rear duck is for A/C (cold) blower only...i was bit suprised heater was not coming when i tried it.(argh)

but after all, people compalined about "not cold cabin" not "not warm enough cabin"..
