08 Mazda3 2.3 - CEL and Traction Light

My brother has a 2008 Mazda3 with the 2.3 L four-cylinder and the five-speed manual. Driving home from work tonight, his check engine light and his traction light came on while driving. If he goes above 30 miles an hour now, he has a hesitation/stutter as he accelerates. Also, he noticed a slight burning smell from the rear end. I am thinking there something wrong with One of the wheel sensors or possibly an ABS sensor. The car has 82,000 miles on it. My brother has no idea how to fix his car, so I have to try to figure it out over the phone. Any insight or suggestions?

Do you or your brother know anyone with a code reader/scanner ? Some auto parts stores rent them and will show you how to use it. Finding out what the code is should lead you to the culprit, so get that first.
