93K auto 2.0L - 3 times in the last week the car will not crank over. 1st time we thought is was a fluke. It acts like a neutral safety switch is not being made to engage starter solonoid. Or possibly starter solonoid is failing. If you play wih the steering wheel and move the shifter around a little so far it has started right up but something is failing and we are going to get stuck. Next time it fails I told the wife to place it in neutral to see if it cranks over. Anyone run into this before?

The car does have some type of factory alarm but it's a very low tech unit.

Just found a service bulletin on this

Bulletin 01-037/08

Subject: Starter motor will not crank and engine does not start (intermittently).

Sounds like they have a known problem with corrosion on the wire to the "S" terminal of starter.

no start update

Did the starter wire repair which did shows signs of corrosion but it didn't fix the problem. Noticed the P indicator did not iluminate green when car would not crank. Went to dealer and purchased a nuetral safety switch $ 65.00 which is called something else by Mazda. Mounts on transmission where shift cable goes thru and so far working.

Update

check the fuel pressure, i had a similiar thing. i was loosing pressure in the fuel pump

Yes, I could under stand that but that was not my case as I could hear my fuel pump come on. It's been starting fine now since the neutral safety switch replacement.
