I'm pretty sure i need to replace the timing belt. squeaking sound after cold starts that goes away after i change the gear. it's been like that since january.

but yesterday after exiting the highway the car started acting strange. the car would hesitate for 3 seconds then accelerate hard. i also heard a strange constant sound when accelerating and the car was feeling underpowered. on my home the car wouldn't go past 3000 rpm unless i really pressed the gas hard.

Today when ever going in reverse the car just dies. but it starts right back up. the cel came on today as well. i'm pretty sure the previous owner didn't change the timing belt.

My dad checked it out and he says its the timing belt as well.
any help will be appreciated

Depends on how much you want to spend and how long your keeping the car. I replaced the belt and nothing else $30 at autozone. You may want to get a tensioner spring just incase I had some issues with mine. If you vc gasket is old replace it while your there

thanks for answering.

Timing belt will not squel. But it does sound like it may have jumped a tooth. How many miles do you have. Any cels?

Need to pull the CEL code before spending money willy nilly. I don't think ithe issue is timing belt-related.

You could pull the cover and inspect the belt before replacing it.

Coil pack going bad

the previous owner said he replaced the spark plugs, coil packs, pcv, wires, battery when i bought the car.

Car has 120000 miles.

I know he didn't replace the timing belt. I will check the coil packs to. thanks

Don't ever make the assumption that every part that comes off the factory line is perfect and doesn't malfunction. I've had too many "NEW" parts not function to not rule it out.

A 'squealing' is a belt usually. I had an issue when mine was cold where the belt was loose. A simple way of checking if it's a belt or not is to loosen both the power steering pump belt and altenator belt when it's cold (take teh belts out). Then crank and let it run for a few seconds. If the squeal doesn't happen, its on the belt line, you can move transmission into gear without harm. Put the altenator belt/water pump belt back on and then tighten it up to spec. Start your car again. No squeal? Put the other belt on and start it. No squeal? ..... You had a loose belt. Squeal? Replace the belt and make sure the pulleys are clean. If you replace both belts and still get a squeal, check for play in the pulleys.

the timing belt on this car is not hard to do if you have the place and tools to do it. Took me about 6-8 hours the first time around. Replace the water pump while you do it.

A toothed belt will not squeal

It will either work or fail. Those are the only two options.
