02 mx-5 6 speed

my dad has an mx-5 with the 6 speed and it has a rattle coming from the shifter. any ideas as to if its a simple bushing replacement? or possibly something else going on in there.
the shifter def feels loose compaired to when it was new. but the car only has 65k on it and i'm looking to clean up his shifter for him.

any thoughts?

Go to Planet Miata and order one of their shifter rebuild kits (http://www.planet-miata.com/index.php?section=search-item&idn=215). You have to make sure you get the right one as they made some sort of change to the 6 speeds over time. These cars are known for having at least one of the shift boots torn, I have seen pictures of some with the lower bushing shot as well. Try doing that, it should help a lot. You don't have to worry about putting any oil in the turret on a 6 speed like you do with a 5 speed.
