Is this the same engine? The difference being the Turbo? I called up a Mazda dealership in my area and was told "Its a different engine" but somehow I doubt that. Any ideas? Also, any ideas on howto get more power/looks out of this puppy? :)
Thanks
Gagan

I'm pretty sure it's the same engine, except for ECU and... well.. turbo manifold, turbo, downpipe, and twin cat on the exhaust after downpipe ;) engine.. it's the same

Im sure too is the same engine. No engineering involved, just a turbo kit and tuned ECU.

For performance...hmmm :( you can put every performance part available now and it will not give enough power, I hate that. But you can start with a CAI and a Cat Back.
Maybe a header too but you will not be able to fine tune the engine for that setup so it will not give what it does to other engines.
Thats why Im thinking on a safe-turbo setup.

At this time, is the best investment for a price/performance ratio: TURBO

Ok so Turbo it is. CAI and Catback I was thinking as well... any idea where I can get the MS turbo? That way get Mazda to install it and tell them where to put my warranty if something goes wrong before my 100,000miles extended is up and they try denying it? :)

last i heard Mazda was debating the sale of the MSP turbo to other Protege owners. Unfortunitly I believe they decide4d against it and to make the MSP a more regular option, hence the 2003.5 release of more of them.

I see you are new to the forum...so Welcome, this is the best information source you can find in the web about our cars.

I think a Mazdaspeed owner will give more accurate info in this, but as far as I know:

1. If you turbo your car, it's on your own. Mazda will not warranty any dammaged part directly or indirectly caused by the turbo. Get the money, turbo it, but drive safe.

2. Mazda do not sell Mazdaspeed turbokit parts, the only way to get them is if you own a Mazdaspeed Protege and want to replace a dammaged part on warranty. You will have to leave to them the original piece.

3. You can try it anyway to ask mazda to install a turbo with warranty, you never know. I think they can install it, but im sure they will not warranty it nor the engine/drivetrain. Try your insurance too.

4. A catback im pretty sure is not a problem to install (if done well), mazda even sells a Racing Beat Catback, but I dont know if this system is good for a turbo setup, I think is ok. I think I will get it over any other choice for my turbo setup.

5. Think about it if this is your only car. Ive got 2 cars, so I feel ok about turbo-ing my Protege5.

6. Use the Aftermarket Guide there you will find ANYTHING

Well the Protege is a daily driver as well as a couple of other cars in the family. What I was told by the dealer is that "the MS engine is different than the '01", but I think he said that the turbo CAN go on the '02... Only reason I thought that its possible for the warranty is the way with Ford... if you get a Roush supercharger, your warranty isnt affected as long as its a Ford dealership doing the work because of Roush's work with ford (I have a mustang as well).
But aside from the turbo, I guess catback and CAI are the way to go to keep the warranty going. So any recommendations on just those? Especially CAI, I"ve seen a bunch on ebay but I'm not sure which is good and which isnt since I've mostly paid attention to Mustang stuff.
Oh and also, once I get the "go" I need "show" as well so what can make it look good? ;)

The engine is the exact same in both cars. The difference is all in the turbo inclusive of the intake and exhuast upgrades and the computer program.

Some dealers are refusing service of the cars that just have CAIs so ask before doing it.

Thats where the whole mustang world comes in handy and the things I've learned. SEMA rules say they cant refuse service unless they PROVE that the CAI caused damage :)

Actualy thats federal law but none the less many dealers will do refuse service and tell owners they voided the warrenty. It has happened to several board members all ready. The reason I say to ask is to see if your dealer is a shithead or not.
