    Wheel Alignment?

Balanced tires on bent rims = vibration Even when the tires are "balanced", riding on bent rims will definitely give you vibration: the tires are then not quite round. I have experienced this with all 4 of my Protege 16 inch aluminum rims. They are all out of round to some degree, and do give...

The Friendly P0171 code strikes again!

Same problem here with the accordian part of the air intake tube here. I used some stretchy sealing tape to seal it up until I get a replacement.

    Code P0171 on a 2001 2.0 liter Protege

2001 Mazda protoge DTC P0171. Symptoms were engine ping on warm days, slight loss of power, hesitation on acceleration and the CEL. This too turned out to be a cracked intake air duct between the MAF and the throttle body, right in between the "accordian style pleats". I temporarily taped it...

    steering column noise?

A year later now since your original post ...have you figured out what this was ? I am having exactly the same symptoms: a creaking noise when I turn the steering rack area (seems like) when stationary or in motion - as if it was rubber on rubber. Everything seems to be working fine, but just...

    Clunking Noise from front end

No they did not charge me. The mechanic admitted that he nicked it with a hammer when extracting the old balljoint. I don't want to know how hard he must have been swinging that hammer. As it turns out they replaced the entire drive shaft. I understand that's a faster job than messing around...

    Clunking Noise from front end

I did replaced the stabilize links earlier, but this partilcular noise ended up being the ball joint. As it turns out, on the Protege, replacing th a ball joint involved replacing the entire control arm. The part was $CAD 125 and an hour of labour. The clunking noise is gone ! Unfortunately...

    Rear sway bar end links

I got messed up with my order too. I should have measured the links on my car before ordering. The Rock auto web site does specify the length of the links depending on the suspension type.

    Howto: Rear Pad (disc) Replacement

Hitting the rusted on rotors so hard make me nervous that I'll set the suspension components out of whack, or break someting altogether. I used a 10 inch 2-jaw puller, a plumbing torch and WD 40. I'd first squirt WD 40 into the rotor / hub and lug nut area holes and the tightened up the...

    Clunking Noise from front end

I'm trying to figure out what is causing a clunking noise from my front end. 2001 Mazda protege, 230,000 km. When going on a straightaway, say over a speed bump, the suspension behaves fine; no unexpected noise. It's when I am turning either left or right, and hit a bump, (such as going...

protege 2003 ES max tire size?

I use 195 50 16 s on my 2001 Protoge. I have been told by several tire places that teh car can easily accommodate 205 50 16 s without any rubbing issues.

Will this work in my calipers?

I bought a high temp brake caliper paint kit a few years ago. I find that I need to re-coat the calipers each spring freshen the look when using my summer rims. I think that any rust paint like Tremclad would do, and it is cheaper than the special caliper paint.

    Rear sway bar end links

Without sport suspension the rear sway bar links are 8.5 inches and with the sport suspension they are 7.5 inches. Have a look at this Rock Auto link for more specifics: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1374072,parttype,7580

    Alternator Removal?

On my 2001 Protoge this week, I started hearing a squeal from under the hood, varying with engine speed; was getting louder by the day. To isolate which component it was coming from, I took a 16 inch long 1/4 inch diameter steel rod and pressed my ear against one end and touched a number of...
